when I bought my 98 Z28 back in 2004 there were still a ton of SS's on the road. Now fast forward to 2010 and they are getting rarer to spot. With the introduction of the 2010 SS I am glad I have a Z28. I wouldn't mind getting a SS hood and Spoiler because I think they look good but I would definitly keep the Z28 Badges.

This pratice is nothing new. Some people like to say that the SS badge is used on too many models now. They fail to remember that this was always the pratice. During the '60s and early '70s, the SS badge made it's way to most every major Chevy model: Impala, Chevelle, Nova, Camaro, El Camino and Monte Carlo. It's no different in recent times; several models in varying sizes, all with an optional "SS" package.

This is correct for the base model, non-optioned SS. For 3 grand you got badges, a hood, a spoiler, and silver wheels. They had LOTS of options you could add to the base package, to name a few: better tires, chrome versions of 2 different wheels, CME exhaust, better lid, dual/dual catback (which people still love today) bigger sway bars front and rear with SLP/Eibach lowering springs and SLP valved Bilstien shocks to match the springs, SLP car cover, key chain etc. etc. So all SSs aren't just a hood and spoiler. Saying that makes you look dumb.

Not if you are talking about 4th gens. You should do some homework before you jump to that conclusion.

Clearly, there was much more to it than hood, wheels, spoiler and a catback. We all stand corrected.

I bought my Z cause I was looking for a stripper model camaro and few SS's came as one. I wanted her to be as light as possible for the drag strip. I really didn't care about the non-functional hood scoop and the fancier, but still non-functional wing.
All the other things the SS came with over the Z28 is also useless. Making it a huge waste of money and I would rather save my money for mods or keeping up with maintance than being able to say, "I have a Camaro SS."

Not all people mod their cars, and that was what the SS was targeted for. Not all people buy 2nd and 3rd hand. Some people buy their cars new and dont want any mods unless "dealer" installed. While that may sound silly to most around here, it did so well that during the last years of 4th gen camaro production, there were just as many SSs as there were Zs. So the tactic by GM was working even though the car still failed at the time.

Barring extreme collector's examples, the SS is only worth more because you paid more. It's not more profitable than a comparable Z28.

If you buy an SS because you like the appearance better, that's a good reason. But buying it because you can sell it for more than a Z28 later is not a good reason, because you had to pay more for it in the first place.

I think there is an even divide of people looking for the lowest possible price on the best possibile conditon LS1 car, and people looking for higher trim levels and willing to pay more for just that.
Also, at the current age of these cars, there are few people getting loans to buy them. With cash deals, the cheaper the car the easier it will be to sell.
