Z28 owners need your personal thoughts
Alright so i've been wondering in my head for some time now why a Z28 and not an SS, for my personal opinion i was born and raised on Z28s...probably concieved in it to haha but it started off the high school years with getting my dads 71 Z28 hugger orange with white stripes 4spd stock car but was clean and beautiful but is now at my grandpa's house because its getting too old to be on the streets, so then i was a little low on cash and bought a 95 Z28 for $1500 not bad for a junior in high school, then i got some more money and got a 01 Z28 auto with 138xxx on it for about $6500 not bad but not so good IMO. Now i bought a 99 Hugger orange white stripes 83xxx with an SLP package, racing seats, and some other extras for 11K. now i've always stuck with a Z28 since to me its a poor mans SS as to an SS is a poor mans Vette. but my uncle my father and a fellow Z28 owner coincidently some how all relatively sounded like this when i asked why a Z28? their responses "back in the day if you had the square exhaust tips on your car then it was badass" so well thats a piece on why i like Z's, anyone like to give your story on why you chosse a Z?

i figured as much that would be the popular response lol but an SS isnt really that much different than a Z28 right? like what a hood, spoiler, exhaust, intake and some other stuff no?

Pretty much. I think the exhaust was only with the SLP option, but I may be wrong. Only thing I can think of is hood, spoiler, intake, and obviously badging.

Weird question IMO.
First I bought a 2002 SS.
Second I bought a 2001 Z28 roller.
My intention was not only to build an SS clone, but to build a clone of MY SS.
The only major difference is that one was going to have an automatic and one a six speed.
In all reality the only difference between the two was the rear spoiler, the hood, the wheels, the front sway bar, the SS badges. I bought used or GM NOS parts for the SS conversion, kept the Z28 emblems on the Z28.
I guess I don't see your point.
If you find a good deal on a black SS I have the flat Z28 hood and rear spoiler, that'll make it a Z28 as far as anyone will be able to tell.

I relate the Z28 to the Camaro, and the SS to anything with a Chevy badge.
(that should stir the pot nicely)
I bought my Z28 because I liked the look, it was in my price range, and it was in town. I bought mine before I knew anything about LS1 Tech, so I didn't know where to search for a car besides the classifieds of the Sunday paper, which really limited my search radius. I'm happy with my car though. It has been absolutely reliable for every day that I've owned it.

I've owned 3 Z28's now so Im biased toward them. Like Z Fury said they put SS badges on everything now, trucks, suv's, even the little cobalts which has definately turned me away even more from an "SS". And from a performance standpoint its a waste to fork out the extra cash to turn a car into an SS when you can clone one so much cheaper.

Its basically the same car. When I was looking I didnt care if it was a Z/28 or SS, what I cared about is the condition of the car, miles and price. And honestly ive never bought a car because of the way it looks. Ive always bought cars because of the engine and the way it drives. That being said after deciding I wanted a F body the big choice was T/A or Camaro, then it was just looking for a clean car with the trans I wanted.
And Ive owned 3 camaros and 2 T/A's all LS1's and I dont see how people think one is so much better then the other, both have good and bad things but it just comes down to what you like. Actually after I bought one of each, I didnt care which one I got, just kept looking until I found a clean LS1

As for my current Z28s, they were both bought used, and I would have just as soon bought an SS if I had found one with the right options/miles/condition. These just came along at the right time.
SS vs Z28 (at least for the 4th gen years) is a pointless debate. There is no significant difference other than hood/spoiler/wheels - and if you like those parts you can always add them later.

I had a 1998 SS bought it for $19,000 with 30,000 miles on it like 6 years ago. I never modded because it wasnt paid for. I sold it and 6 years later, I got my 1999 z28 for $9000 with 66,000 miles on it.
Mine came with the following options and what I thought of them
SS hood, love it
SS spoiler, like but the z28 is just as good
auburn rear, going to go 12 bolt sooner or later
bilstein shocks, eibach springs, shocks are ok, springs sag after time
hotchis swaybars, these are worth it
monsoon stereo, 12 disc cd, stupid 12 disc broke
power antenna, antenna motor smoked and stopped working
So I bought a Z28 and the only thing I wish i had really was the SS hood. I planned on modding mine anyways so I really only wanted a 6 speed and t tops.
