Default High milage C5 questions..

Hey everyone,

I have a buyer for my 02 Camaro SS, and I've been seeing some deals on C5's that caught my eye. Found a 99 with 108K miles for $9K ASKING price, which would be a few grand less than what I'm selling my Camaro for.

I know 100K mile f-body's are still pretty reliable, but I'm pretty new to vettes and their issues. Is a 100K+ mile vette something I should run from in regards to maintanence or problems? Or is it something I can feel pretty safe DDing?

Thanks in advance!

I don't speak from experience but if a properly taken care of ls1 fbody over 100k still provides reliable drive ability ,then generally the vette will be just like fbody if not better.

The the corvette is a much nicer car all around to start with.

I'm almost forced to sell my SS with the offer I got. I wouldnt mind keeping it, but its over market value. I could buy the C5 and have a $4K left over from the sale... So I'm looking for replacement options.

Double the milage, but its a vette! lol

I will never, ever, buy a car based solely on mileage. I bought my POS LT1, with the idea that I wanted the lowest mileage one I could find (60k) and it was a nightmare. I think the reason why it had low miles was because it probably was broken half the time. I only put 10k miles on it the time I had it - 2 1/2 years. Mileage is obviously a factor, but I'd look at other stuff like how well the car looks - interior, exterior and engine bay, plus nothing beats taking it to a good mechanic for a going-over.

I know it's a stereotype, but I would think since Corvettes are owned typically by older, more affluent buyers, 100k+ miles probably isn't a big deal since it's probably been relatively unabused and well maintained (but you know what happens when you assume).

Yeah, IK never to buy a car based off miles alone, but I was wondering when they can sometimes turn into money pits or when expensive things start to break.

I'm gonna tell you, if I had found a C5 for $9k asking price, in good condition, M6, non-crazy color, it'd prolly be in my garage right now, but I had to get another Camaro for the occasional need for the back seat. I've always been a Camaro fan but Corvettes are starting to get my attention in my old age. They just seem to be better built than comparable year f-bodies. And of course they're faster and handle better right out the box.

This one was an auto though. There was a C5 Z with 120K miles for 11,300 though that looked appealing.

My 99 FRC had around 100K and the interior wasn't holding up too well. I would spend the extra 2.5 grand and get the Z. I'm not a fan of the targa tops. I found it to be very different to drive. I like my SS better, altho I mis having a manual.

Sad to see the car go, but if you can get a great deal for your car, I don't see why not to sell it.

I hear ya man. I love the car.. But I just cant say no to the offer. He checked it out today and we agreed on $12,750. Were just waiting for a good day to test drive it. There isnt any issues, so its pretty much sold in my books. I'm not going to be mad if the guy backs out, because it runs and drives perfect and is in awesome condition.. But I'd really love to get a C5 now.

Wow, I'd sell it in a heartbeat for that. Sad to see it go, but that's a deal I wouldn't pass on.

Are you saying newer as in years or mileage? I'd rather have a 99 with 50k than an 02 with 100k. But that doesn't really apply to this as the C5 is 100k or whatever he said, just making my point.

I say take look long and hard for a C5 (or C5Z if you're lucky) for 15k or so.

Not me, the newer car will actually appreciate if you put below average mileage on it.

I know someone who does this. Buys the newest car with highest mileage he can find. He drives it (below avg mileage) for two years and either sells it for what he paid OR more commonly, makes money.

I'm not talking geo metros either. He has done this with M5's, 540s, duramax pick-ups etc etc.

Never has a car payment, cars only cost him the price of maint.

Mileage means nothing to me. It all depends on how the car checks out. My 98 Z28 has 181,344 miles on it as of now and is in better condition than cars with half the miles. My 00 Corvette has 94,100 on it. For 9k if the car is in good condition that is a steal. You could sell it for more than 9k if you didn't like it

Well it depends on what options are in the C5's. One's with Competition Mode sometimes have a EBCM issue. It's hit or miss with that though but it's expensive to fix($1k+). They don't have alot of major issues just little ones. Column Lock($45 fix with bypass) dual climate control screen dim/not working(easy writeup to fix it) and stuff like that. Just little problems that can get annoying. I've had the multifunction switch(turns on headlights) go bad but it can be fixed without replacing, the oil pressure sender went out($15 and easy to change) other than that no major issues on mine. They are very different in how they drive and handle over an F-body but i love both. I'd say for the price offer the guy $8500 for the Vette and take it and run. Save the extra $ for a rainy day. Mine is at 107k miles and i've had it since it had 80k and no major issues at all

IF the car was taken care of by the previous owner i would not think twice about it. I used to work at a Chevy dealer and vettes came in with more mileage than that for just preventative maintance. the only major problem that I can remember is that AIR check valve going out and the oil pressure sensor not reading or bounching around.
