Default How often do you change your oil?

Im wanting to hear from the guys who never/ or hardly ever drive their cars. My car sits in the garage and maybe gets driven once every 2 weeks. So it will take me forever to hit 3k miles. So i just change it every 6 months now. Anybody change theirs like once a year..LOL.. With synthetic of course.

Even when i change my oil, theres maybe 1-200 miles on it if that. Just wondering if im wasting money to keep constantly changing that early.

I just wanted to ask and see what intervals members are changing their oils. I know the manual says every 3k. I know there are alot of people who change it every 3k no matter what. But like i said, it will take me forever to reach 3k as i hardly ever drive it.

I'm in the exact situation you're in. With my old LT1 I averaged about 1800mi a year, and this car is the same. I changed my other once a year with synthetic. I could probably go longer because the oil definitely isn't used up.

Mine gets changed once a year with Amsoil full synthetic. Usually about 5,000 miles. They claim it can be ran for 25,000 miles, but I do it once a year. Waste of money to do $70 oil changes 4 times a year when it's a full synthetic...

I know my dad does the once a year (in the fall right before storage) change on his Harley, which is what they recommend to avoid having oil contaminates in your crank case for long term storage. I guess that might depend on where you live though, as a summer car/bike in the north is used differently than a year round car that gets the same mileage put on it.

If it's year round, I'd like to hear what the experts recommend also. I think every 6 months would be fine, but I don't know what's best. Have you checked out BobIsTheOilGuy?

What about for yall going over 3k and running synthetic? And what do you think of a 3k change of standard oil vs a 5k change of synthetic which do you thinks better and why?

Keep em comin guys.. this is exactly why i wanted to post this.

Every 6 months when i change my oil, its so damn new when it comes out. So im really wondering if its worth it to keep changin every 6 months. I feel like im wasting my money for a car that just sits there.

Ive got 2200 miles on my '02 so that tells you how often it gets out....I just change it once a year....cheaper to do a oil change than let it sit in there for years and screw something up in the motor

Once a year for mine. It logs about 5000 miles a year.

I have a friend who did a crate motor LS1 swap 5 years ago in his Chevelle and I think he said he's only changed the oil in it twice. I don't remember what brand synthetic he runs but the car has less than 1000 miles since he did the swap. He did an oil analysis the first time he changed it at 2 years and it came back perfect so he said he's not changing it again anytime soon.

If I had your car I probably wouldnt change it often, maybe every 3 years. I would check it & make a judgement call based on how it looks. It sounds like it mostly sits. I use synthetic & change mine every 6K, which amounts to about once a year as I put 7-8k miles on it.

I drive mine everyday but I would do once a year if I was in your situation. I run valvoline full synthetic and go 5k. My dad owns a machine shop and goes 6k in his 07 Silverado using the same oil for what it's worth.

This would be me. The oil on my '98 gets changed once per year. Some years I've driven the car ~1200 miles, other years more like 300 miles. There have been some instances where I probably could have gone 2 or 3 years, but so far I've just stuck to the once-a-year routine for that car. This is using M1 0W40 oil.

The last couple years I've only driven the car 200-300 miles per year, so if that continues I'll probably start changing it every 2 years.

Typically for me about twice a year when the weather changes. Once at the start of summer, once at the start of winter. Easy way to remember when its time. I have put 3k on my car in 3 years.

Every 3 months, regardless of mileage (always less than 3k) with synthetic. Stored from November to mid April over winter every year.

Once a year here also. Just 22,000 miles on it over 10 years. No issues.
If my 911 (same low miles) can get by with once a year (12 quarts of 20w-50), then my T/A certainly can. Again, no issues. Both are garage-kept though.
Not sure how I would feel if the car was left outside in 10 degree winter weather or 90 degree humid summer weather. Too much potential for condensation problems.

Damn RPM thats insane to go 2 years without an oil change..LOL. though it does hardly get driven. Where im at, we definitely get all the seasons. Winter, snow, summer, and all. But my car just sits in the garage. I might consider just changing it every year now also, as i hardly drive my car.

I change at 3k, regardless of time, and use conventional oil.

Sometimes that's once a year, sometimes it's into the next year. I don't worry about it much. It only becomes a problem if the TBN gets low and it's not able to counteract acid. That has never been an issue in any of my used oil analysis'.

Most change oil frequently out of fear because they don't really know what's happening inside their engine. Oil breaks down a lot slower than many people are aware.

Right on Mr. Incrediblei. I just always wondered if oil "may" get bad as a car just sits there or if anything negative happens.
