My 99 v6 auto firebird was a good race for my buddies manual gt same year model.. with 2 car lengths every race, depending on if I got the jump or not it took him a while to come around me.

They are a joke.

I'm not disputing the fact that they're slow when stock or in close to stock form, because they are and everyone knows that.

I'm just saying, with all the performance stuff aside, if the car is in better overall condition than the OP's Z28 and doesn't have any major issues, while the said Z28 does have it's share of issues, why not take advantage of the offering and take the car that's a bit more solid instead?

Looks like a clean car, but those non-PI 4.6's are complete dogs. If it was a Cobra, I could see it being a reasonable trade off...but that car will never even be remotely fast without significant engine work or a complete engine swap.

I think Ford had to actually try to get only 215HP out of an OHC V8, its completely ridiculous that it ever left the drawing board with heads and intake that flow so badly. The 99+ PI cars are at least decent, still not all that fast though.

I see your point that the car is in better condition, but remember the saying that the grass is always greener on the other side. You say you are worried about your rear, and while the Mustang's 8.8 is in fact much stronger, the Mustang has a much weaker transmission (T5) as opposed to the F-body's T56. The Mustang also has an inferior suspension design of a modified MacPherson strut setup in the front and a 4 link in the back, as compared with the F-bodys SLA coil over shock front suspension and 3 link rear. Those year Mustangs also have absolutely pathetic brakes - the front is 11" rotors with single piston cast iron calipers, and the rear is solid discs with cast iron calipers. All 98+ F-bodys have 12" front and rear rotors, fully vented, with dual piston calipers up front and single pistons out back, all aluminum. The stock Mustang GT brakes of that year are barely adequate for daily use, never mind any spirited driving. Luckily the Cobra brake upgrade with 13" rotors and dual piston PBR calipers is a direct bolt on and is very affordable.

Pretty slow. Over a full second slower in the 1/4 mile.

I wouldn't do it, and I'm a Mustang guy at heart. The 96-98 GT makes less than 250whp, pretty close to 200whp actually. I personally like the interior better of the Mustang, so the chassis itself would be better as a DD along with added fun of rowing the gears, but that engine is total junk.

Actually 96-98 modular engines are backed by a T45 5-speed, which with a set of billet shift forks is pretty stout. But yes, the front suspension is a joke, and I personally find the 4 link rear better, especially for drag racing.

another thing that i like about the mustang is the sound, has 1 chamber flowmasters with a off road x this car sound amazing, i know it in great shape as far as motor cause its been compleatly gone thru, guy who owns it has a 900 h.p kenne bell 04 cobra.... and i relly want a stick shift. autos are boring. so if anyone here is willing to trade me a m6 ls1 lt1 car for it i would much rather do that lol

Not a good trade. Period. But if it's what you want to do then go ahead. I know you're looking for advice but really you are going to make your own decision no matter what we say. I had a 98 v6. The interior was crap. Even compared to the camaro. Money wise, power wise, the reliability of the camaro vs the mustang..... bad deal. You can sell the camaro and buy a newer GT.
