the thing i can think of, is that water got mixed with the power steering fluid..

but idk what else can be mixed in your psf with what you described.

Or someone put Transmission fluid in there.. I've seen it happen..lol

It's perfectly fine to use automatic transmission fluids in many power steering systems.

I've even heard of some that actually call for trans fluid in the PS. One of the primary differences is that trans fluid is dyed red.
