Help Me Build My SS!

Help Me Build My SS!
So my odometer has hit 175k... The LS1 still runs strong but I'm thinking its time to rip it out, bore it out somewhere in the range of 383-400ish and I don't have a damn clue what to put onto it. Any suggestions?
Not really planning on making money with it or going nuts at the track, but I'd like to have some fun on the road. Supercharger could be on the horizon, but not in my immediate scope...
Someone suggested I pull my motor, have it machined, and purchase all new parts for my build but I just dont know how to choose them.
I want a nice powerful cam that sounds nice at idle and makes decent power. Seems like there's a million choices of specs on a cam. How does anyone decide?
Heads? Pistons? What do I need to completely build up my LS1 to something a little closer to the high 400s (HP)?

if you want a 383cid set up. i would check out the TSP stroker kit.
to get your car in the 400whp zone N/A you would only have to add a decent cam to what you already have, a decent head/cam package + fast set up will get you well over 400

Thanks Thule, I'll definitely take a look
And as far as the LS2, it would be nice to pick one up and build everything on it; however, I'm under the impression that I'll pay significantly less if I bore/rebuild the LS1 I already have...?

You cannot bore an LS1 without re-sleeving. What you need to do is come up with a budget first. There are so many options out there. If you are looking for around 500 hp, I would look at getting something similar to an iron block 408 or an 402 LS2 stroker. Much better bang for your buck than stroking the LS1 to a 383. You can sell your LS1 as is, then use that money to fund the new engine.

Well I was hoping to knock it all out for under 4k, but I'm slowly finding out that would be impossible.
I have definitely been eyeing a 402 LS2, more than anything at the moment...
Then I could have the block and put money into it as I can afford it, and eventually put it in..
Sounds like the majority vote, though, is to scrap the 383 idea and get the 402 LS2. I was looking at TSP, but I'm also trying to find out what Speed Inc can do for me, since I'm so close to them...
How does anyone decide what spec parts they want? There must be a million selections of cams, heads, etc.??
