I prefer an inductive pickup, clamp-on timing light
for that.

but would i still be able to see spark if i just grounded it to the head? im trying to figure out why it wont start. i know im not getting fuel past the injectors for sure. they sat for a LONG while but i boiled them for about 20 mins and that got alot of crud out. my question is even though the motor isnt firing up, would the porcelin portion of the sparkplug near the tip still have brown marks if the plugs were igniting but the motor not being started? my plugs were brand new but i pulled them and looked at em and they have brown marks on em

hold the plug in your hand, stick the other one on something metal, and have someone crank it for you. You'll KNOW if you have spark

I'm actually NOT being a smartass... It's what I wind up doing half the time.

If I remember correctly, holding the gas pedal all the way to the floor while cranking prevents the LS engine from starting and flooding. I do not know if this kills the spark and/or fuel, but if you have a second person, you can try it.

i pulled the plug after trying to start it.. even if the motor doesnt run, is the plug capable of having these marks from igniting? they were brand new when i put em in. ( on the insulator)

Sure, you could do that. You could also use a Volt/Ohm meter, or the timing light like Jimmy said.

Pull the plug wire from the coil to check the coil leave the wire close to the coil so it will still make contact get someone to crank it if it sparks its good next plug the coil to the wire then pull the wire off of the plug leave it close by so it will still make contact crank it again if it sparks the wire is good next unscrew the plug from the head connect it to the wire and crank get some one to crank it if it sparks then its good
