Default mercedes amg 6.2 compared to ls3

How does the mercedes 6.2 put out 505 to the crank? With great drivability? My neighbor has a c63 and made 520 to the wheels with just a tune thats it...

I dont see why a ls3 cant put out the same numbers... What is needed to get a higher hp out of a chevy ls engine? Without big cams or forced induction. Do you bring up compression and rpm?

Without forced induction you'll need better heads, cam, intake, etc...just like any other motor

Dry sump oil system, DOHC, 11.3 CR, redline 200rpm higher, Variable geometry intake manifold, VTEC on exhaust and intake cams., etc, etc. its not a $6K crate motor basically.

LS3 NA I think are like high 400/low low 500rwhp on a heads/cam all bolt on setups i have seen, less on a auto.

Roots based superchargers are an easy 440 wheel bolt on. pulled and with supporting mods can be a 500 wheel car with much better DD manners (low end torque) than a max effort NA setup.

In addition to its proprietary waffle bearing design, the M156 is sprinkled at the factory with a very specifically-formulated and secretive substance known as "fucktard dust." You should try it some time, especially when choosing a forum to post in.

Because it's a complete different engine with a helluva lot better components?

It can, 505hp at the crank is easy peasy for the LS3.

Without big cams or forced induction. Do you bring up compression and rpm?
Not going to get far without a cam, compression will help a tiny bit and RPM not so much unless you change out the cam.

pshhh there is one for 28k on ebay. With free shipping I might add. Seriously though, just completely different beasts. The only similarities are the displacement and number of things that go up and down.

EDIT: there are used ones going for <$10k...hmm...

Dude....its a Mercedes.....not a comparatively cheesy Chevy LSx engine.

Mercedes is class, serious R&D, hand built art work with functionality and drive-ability and MEGA reliability.

Chevy LSx is just a functional 8 cylinder block of metal....not really much to talk about.

Either way.......a Chevy will never be a Mercedes.

............don't get me wrong, I'm on my 3rd fully built LSx...I love them. But its just not in the same league as a Mercedes.

You guys ever see the race between the Lambo Merc LP670-4 SV and the Mercedes 722 AMG 6.3L......

Lambo....lighter with more power...........

Mercedes walked the Lambo in a straight line...........pretty crazy. Just pure engineering marvels....they are.

I believe the plaintiffs did stop pursuing the issues due to Mercedes resolving their issues. I daily a benz because the build quality is rock solid and bar skanks love it, but they aren't made of invincible unicorn rainbows. They need the same maintenance every car does to maintain high levels of reliability.

I can't speak to the lawsuit, but I have a C63 that is bone stock with 62k miles on it. It's an amazing engine, smooth 650 or so rpm at idle, and pulls and pulls and pulls all the way to the 7xxx rpm redline. The C63 is under-tired for the torque this engine has, I go through rear tires at a 2:1 rate vs. the fronts.

It's a damn fine car, but as others have said, a different beast than an LS engine.

This is a old post. C63 makes 465HP from the factory unless it is the 507 version which makes 507HP or the P31 which made about 490HP. E63 and the S63 with the
6.2L M156 Made around 530-535HP. The difference was mostly in the tune, the tune on the C63 had the throttle bodies limited to 70% max opening to keep it from
being competitive with the more expensive E63 and S63. The other cars also had a less restrictive exhaust that was worth around 5-7 HP and better air inlet system worth around 8 HP.

With a tune the tuning companies allow the throttle bodies to open 100% and some timing changes and this gets the car to 490-540HP depending on the tune. Yes almost 90HP from a tune because at WOT the throttle blades were limited to 70% and the timing was retarded over it's bigger brothers. That 540HP at the engine makes around 430-450HP at the wheels. To get the car to 475-490rwhp they are installling long tube headers and mid pipe and an exhaust which gains 30-50HP over the log style manifolds. Also replacing the air filter and inlets for the 5-8HP.

When you see one over 500rwhp or 500-525rwhp it's almost always the tune + exhaust + air inlet and filters + e85 tune which gains it around 25rwhp/10rwtq. On these cars with DOHC it would be ideal to spin it well over 7000 RPM, but this car has a long runner intake to boost low speed torque that starts shutting it down around 6500RPM. If you want to make power at 7000+RPM on these you need the shorter runner higher flowing SLS intake manifold.

Almost no one changes the cam on these things. From the factory the camshaft specs are between 205 and 210@.050" with .470" lift. The heads flow great though with the following flow numbers:

Intake Exhaust
.200 202.5 117.8
.250 254 154
.300 300.0 211.1
.350 332 207
.400 348 214
.500 356 228

In the DOHC with "cam on buckets" style of valve actuation most cams have .300 to .500" lift, .500 to .600" lift would be like a .7" lift in the LS land. The heads have great low lift flow but some of the big name ported LS3 heads start matching these by .500" lift, up until this point the 4V head on a 4.02" bore is winning. LS3 guys are not reluctant to run cams a bit over .600" lift so that evens it out somewhat.

So there are quite a few LS3 with the 500-575rwhp and a few at around 600rwhp with the 450-475rwtq. So it is very competitive. Maybe this sort of question got the LS3 guys discovering the potential of their own build, because today 505HP is not a big deal out of a 6.2L LS3.
