I'm in GA and purchased a car out of AL a few years ago and it wasn't a big deal. Paid the dealer the agreed upon price, no sales tax since it was out of state, got the car back here to GA and went to the tag office and had to pay the sales tax in my home state and then tag too. It really wasn't a problem.
Now I'm interested in a car that's in Canada and it seems like there are A LOT more hoops to jump through for an out of country purchase!

I live in Tennessee and bought one in Miami. It was private party. The only trouble I had was I financed mine and I had to jump through a few extra hoops of paperwork from my bank to the seller that he had to get signed and notarized. But other than that it was easy, just a little nerve racking bc pictures sometimes can hide things.
I just brought a cashiers check with me for an agreed upon price. My advice would be to talk to the owner over the phone thoroughly if it's a private party. Get him to send you more pictures, and if possible a video of it running.
Also, just say listen I'm traveling xxxx amount of miles are there any surprises I'm going to find when I get there. I think most decent sellers/car guys respect that question.
All in all my process went great and the people I bought it from were awesome folks. Good luck!

When I lived in Mass I bought cars from NH and RI quite a few times. Just needed a title filled out or a written and signed bill of sale along with the registration in that person's name. The paperwork you need is based on the state it comes from. Many states don't have titles on older cars.

The major issue is whether you will be physically present to inspect and purchase the car or not. In the first case, it's simple. In the latter, it is often best to have some third party representation.
When I purchased my M6 Formula from Oregon, I found someone on here to go inspect it. That was helpful, although he failed to mention it had numerous hood chips. You can also use a bank or some institution for escrow on the deal. The bank receives the title from the seller and the check from you, and then exchanges them once the check clears. Then you arrange shipping with the seller.
With my car, I think I sent the seller (a dealer) a contract which I signed and notarized, and he did the same and returned copy to me. Then I sent substantial deposit for return of the title, after receipt of which I sent the remainder of the funds.
