That discrepancy is too wide apart for similar type companies..
Not joking here. This is a new quote as of 7:22 am this morning.

That's for sure. You would probably have to fight a regular insurance company tooth and nail to get even $5,000 for a 22+ year old car.

@Treburkulosis I have no problem with the Grundy quote but you are saying Hagerty is over $1500 for the same thing.

Strange that "other than collision" coverage costs more than collision coverage. With regular insurance, comprehensive coverage is usually quite a bit cheaper.

It is we will see if that is the actual price that stands when I switch next month. I haven't had a ticket in many many years and I'm well past the flight risk of age with insurance lol.

Thank you for the detailed quotes. I'm speechless and baffled to be honest. I'm sure you will find the best insurance for yourself and your specific needs.

I honestly think it's a matter of how you're allowed to use your car between the two quotes. As far as I know, Hagerty doesn't care how much you drive and when, as long as it's not a commuter car. Grundy places a lot of restrictions on driving, it seems. If you can only drive to car shows, it gives them an "out" to deny your claim if you decide to just go for a drive in your car simply to enjoy it. You pay far less because you're giving them the ammo to deny your claim if you drive outside of their restrictions.

Except this is not the case. My Grundy policy paperwork clearly states that "limited pleasure driving" is allowed (and completely UNlimited driving in terms of hobby events, e.g. if you want to do the entire Power Tour, across the country, every year, you would be covered). What do they mean by "limited"? Well, I asked them this question when I first got the policy 15+ years ago, and they said that going for a pleasure cruise on a nice day was fine, but that I just couldn't be taking the car to work on a regular basis. How would they know? Frequency of claims I guess, or if something happens to it in your parking lot at work, but this is also why they require every driver listed on the policy to also have a "daily driver" that is separate from the cars on the policy. If you have to have a daily driver anyway, this makes it unlikely that anyone would be using the "collector" car for anything other than hobby activities and occasional pleasure driving, which is what they want.

FWIW, I have a friend in my local car show circuit that had to file two claims with Grundy in a short period of time, and they paid with no issues and didn't drop him. One was a claim that I'm honestly surprised they even covered (blower belt snapped due to age, and cracked the fiberglass hood - Grundy paid to fix the hood and paint).

On my Grundy policy I'm allowed up to 10k miles a year unrestricted EXCEPT, no commuting, no shopping trips and it must be garaged while at my address. I have my 2000 WS6 Convertible agreed valued for $25k. I pray that I'll never have to make a claim and haven't had to so far.

Hmmm, that's interesting. Maybe I'll have to look into insuring my Formula and my SS with Grundy then. That's basically how I use my cars, nice day pleasure driving. I go to the track sometimes, but no insurance will cover you there.

It's still hard to figure out for me. Grundy allows good stuff for sure but Hagerty encourages use as a pleasure vehicle. They are always sending things in the mail to enjoy your car. Want to take a trip to anywhere in the US, no problem. We've been all over the US in our T/A. All for roughly $300 per year at $16,500 appraised value for us. The typical $100k/$300k/$100k policies that we have on our 'regular' insured cars. One claim recently for $2,000 that was covered and no increase except for $15 which i just consider inflation. Zero deductible too.
Obviously it's a state to state thing. I feel fortunate.
** Wanted to add one more possible factor. Being a long time customer may also matter. I actually have no idea but I have insured other cars with them as well with no claims. Maybe that counts a bit too. I also have supplied them with real world sales data when I sold my 1974 AMC a few years back. Was I rewarded? I never asked and was just happy with my pricing and coverage.
