I was 16 years old back in 1986 when I saved up enough money and bought my first car. A 1977 Camaro LT for $900. I worked on an orange grove making $4.25 per hour where I drove tractors spraying and mowing. They say you'll appreciate something more when you've worked for it and I"ll have to say that I agree. It was the first of six Camano's I've owned. I co-signed for my son's 2011 C6 Grand Sport and it made me happy to see him have something I could've only dreamed of when I was young. He ended up selling it and then turning around and buying a damn crotch rocket..

He's already regretting that decision to some extent because he wants another C6 only this time he'll be on his own. If I'm signing for a Corvette again it's gonna be for me.

Came across the young ladies thread on corvette forums. It appears she’s running into what we tried to explain to her.
Crazy… She ignored everyone and found out she can’t afford the insurance.

I wanted a Mustang when I was out of college. The insurance was outrageous. I had to wait until 25 when my insurance company dropped the rates.

This isn't really swinging for the fences, ask for a used Gallardo. The gen 1, with the lamer e-gear. She wouldn't want to get too ridiculous.

Owning a car is wayyyy more than just having one in the driveway. Of all the kids I knew growing up that were "given" their first cars, none of them had their cars more than 4 years. These days you HAVE to have insurance, and it is a killer. I could go on for hours waxing nostalgic on my first, second, and third cars but it doesn't serve your main point.

What about having this C7 will improve your life over a Carola/Accord? Both of those cars will be far more reliable, cheaper to maintain, far cheaper to drive (insurance, gas, tires, brakes), etc. Sure they aren't much to look at but, they have a back seat and trunk with real space. If someone dings the doors in the local grocery store parking lot your blood pressure won't hit stroke territory. Basically there are a million practical reasons to NOT have one, especially as a first car.

My best friend in high-school, a rich kid, had really nice first cars, 3 of them, and they all got totaled, 1 totaled twice! He is just a bad driver on anything with wheels. Driving is a skill and one that takes a lifetime to perfect and most people on the road barely get by with it making it hazardous for the rest of us. Learn on a slow, ugly, reliable, boring commuter car. If you mess up and smack a curb turning too tight with those steel stamped wheels and road rash the crap out of plastic hubcaps no biggie. Get caught in a hailstorm, your ride just looks like a golf ball until you learn how to do body work. You get the point. You can learn so much from small crappie cars and save so much money, and produce much less stress to you and your folks that it will pay off down the line. It has less to do with your level of responsibility and skill as it does you are starting out and getting that car now runs a real risk of getting you jammed up and paying for it years and years down the line. Nobody has mentioned this one yet but sometimes cops just love to pull over people in these cars because they are haters. Some cops will single out a car in a group and reward that driver with a ticket. I've seen it happen to a guy who was cruzin around on the weekend while others were street racing, but he was targeted. Totally not fair but it is what it is. A C7 will attract good and bad attention. On a practical side, have you ridden in this car before? I got a ride in a C5 once and that stopped any inkling of ever wanting a Corvette, it was like riding on a skateboard. After 30 minutes my back and kidneys were killing me and this was when I was 20!

The heart wants what the heart wants, the head is there to keep the heart from breaking.

This part surprises me. I've driven several C5s over the years, sometimes back-to-back with the '02 Z28 that I used to daily drive. I don't find the C5 ride quality to really be any different than a 4th gen F-body, other than the IRS allowing you to push the car harder in a turn, and the car feeling a bit better balanced overall. But general ride quality was pretty much the same between several C5s and the four 4th gen F-bodies I've owned.

On the other hand, C4 Corvettes do tend to ride more harshly than a 4th gen F-body in my experience. Not enough to cause me physical discomfort by any means, but noticeably more harsh. With that said, all of these cars seem as soft as a motorhome compared to my '71 with HD multi-leaf rear springs and traction bars.

It must have been a C4 as it was a '91 or '92 at latest as this was right before I joined the Navy. Granted these were Alabama back roads but the ride was just too damn harsh and my hangover didn't help any. I swear I could feel every ripple, seam, and dip in the road. These cars just weren't designed for poorly maintained back roads. The only rides that bad I can recall were from low riders and track cars. Driving my 4th gen it never reminded me of that Corvette. Actually my TA rides better then most of the more modern cars I have driven, even those with adjustable suspensions (my Acura has this and its very over-rated).

Default Cars that get older AND their value INCREASES

I have had MANY Pantera owners, my customers, give their Pantera to a child of theirs.
At that time, a car valued at 30K, the same Pantera today is worth 130K.
Thus, an intelligent parent should find a "first car" that also could increase in value over time.
Maybe your child will wax their car more often!

Your welcome. Honestly I was unsure if I should post the links. Figured if it was inappropriate someone would let me know. Lol

One's first vehicle, assuming it will be used for daily transportation, should never be purchased with a primary goal of generating future profits - even more so when one lives in a harsh climate with salt/snow in the winters. Even a supercar/exotic will lose value when a new driver starts knocking it around and driving it daily in terrible weather. It would need a restoration to regain previous value, and in 99% of examples there is no money to be made on a restoration unless you do most or all of the work yourself.

I shudder to think that anyone would find something like a Pantera to be an "intelligent" choice as a very first primary transportation vehicle for their newly licensed child.

On the other hand, nothing wrong with picking a 4-season ready, practical transportation appliance that's also not likely to lose much value in the near/mid term (i.e. a combination of already being near the bottom of depreciation yet being a model that's known for very long term reliability). THAT would be an intelligent choice.

Never wrecked it but did have the right front wheel come off while driving to work one morning. I had a tire shop install some used tires and apparently the guy got too carried away with the impact. It was funny watching my tire pass me by once the car came to a stop. Another time I forgot to close the hood all the way until it locked and it came up on me again on my way to work when doing about 60-70 mph. When I stopped to close it I had the corners by the hood by the windshield bent upwards 90° Yeah I was about 17 or 18 at that time when all I ever did was try to keep gas in it to go. Ended up turning into a choo chopo train shortly after. When it comes to automobiles and a young man I've got some real hard lesson learned stories I could tell you for sure.

Like that time I put $2000 down on a 78 Formula Firebird at some mom and pop car dealeship and on my way to work one morning the water temperature a/k/a idiot light came on and I ended up blowing a head gasket. I hadn't had the car a week and where I worked and purchased the car was some 70 miles away. I tried doing the work myself and only made matters worse as I had no idea what the hell I was doing. I got it back together and it ran like **** so I called the dealership and they said to bring it back and they'll see what they could do for me. Take a guess at what happened next!
