Don't go by online quotes. You can almost always get a better deal through your agent. Try to get the car listed under your parents until you are 25, and don't forget the online quotes don't take into effect good student discounts most of the time.
You can also get a lower price if you have house insurance or other cars through companies such as Farmers.

damn, that reminds of when i was 18 a few years ago,i had just gotten my license and was trying to get a 2000 SS, my mom had to cosign with me and was approved for a loan. the loan was from state farm and they asked for me to get full coverage insurance before they released the check out to the dealer, since i was going to be under the lien i also had to be under the insurance on the car so i started my search for insurance...i went to about 6 or 7 local places and they all quoted me from 800-1100 a month!!! i was like wtf...that was apart from the 320 monthly payment, i told my mom i might as well buy a damn house...so instead we got an unsecured loan and i ended up getting an lt1 with, of course, cheaper insurance lol

Some of you guys pay a lot of money for insurance, but $500-800 per month is so stupidly high that I'd probably just give up driving and get a job within walking distance.
For the following 4 cars:
'96 Bonneville
'98 Camaro Z28
'02 Monte Carlo SS
'04 Cavalier sedan
I pay $1500 per 6 months for FULL coverage on all 4 cars total. That's through State Farm.
Then again, I'm over 25, married, and have a very clean record. Actually, I think that my rates are still a little high, but that's because I'm just a block away from Chicago. Once I move further from the city the price will drop. Location plays a big role in your rates in addition to the other factors.

I ask the bank how much my monthly loan would be and they say 250. good so far.
NOW FOR THE FUNNY PART
I then go to geicos online quote giver, and this is what it told me for the LOWEST PACKAGE YOU CAN GET.
2001 Eclipse GT: 784 month
1999 Prelude SH: 784 month
Then i figure, well i guess these are "sports cars" , so i put in a 1999 4 door Cavalier.
1999 Cavalier 4 door: 583 month
WOW WTF IS THAT??? a 80hp ugly cav is 583 month for minimum insurance?
Do you guys pay like 5000 a month for your camaros? im afraid to type in a real car on there, i might puke.....
i think im gona be walking to work with prices like that....

I totalled an Explorer last year and my rate from Progressive for a '00 Z28 is about $1800 every six months.

That's insane! No way that can be right if you have a clean record, even with Geico. I bought a brand new '99 S-10 Xtreme (4cyl) when I was 18. With two wrecks (one at fault, one not) three wreckless driving tickets, six or seven 10+ mph speeding tickets, and several misc. tickets my insurance was about $400 a month with Geico.
I've learned my lesson pretty quick and I haven't had a moving violation ticket in four years now. At 25 I pay $210 a month for a '99 Z28 (full coverage), '99 S-10 (full coverage), and '78 Dodge Ramcharger (min. coverage).

$55/month full coverage on my vette. There's no way I could afford a nice car if I had to pay $200/month in insurance like you guys do.

i'm 19 and have a 93 z28 with 2 at fault wrecks, a speeding and a failure to stop at a stop sign and mine is 234 a month from progressive without being under my parents. alfa was gonna be nearly 400 and state farm dropped me. in alabama, spinning your tires is considered street racing the cop dropped it to speeding but it still hurts. i know that most states just call it disturbing the peace or something similar. that's what i get for living in a broke state. the insurance ain't too bad though.

North Jersey is just stupid with their insurance rates. I paid 165 a month in DC with a 1995 rx7 and a 2001 saturn coupe. Now they want 500+ a month up here. I dont care what 'reasoning' they have, that is a horrible way to treat customers who have been with a company for years. I hate the fact that they just get away with it.
