what can I do?
My formula is all stock except for a k&n air filter (I dont think that really counts) what is the cheapest way I can get my car to go faster? (plain and simple) Im really not expecting any huge power gains but mabye just mabye i could break into 300hp territory.
my situation: college is coming up soon and education>mods
what do you think I should do? i have been looking at the parts for sale forum and it seems that there are some good deals, but ive not bought anything yet.

Pull the non-essentials, like A/C, audio system, all passenger seating, padding under the carpet, jack & spare, etc. There is a huge list of stuff you can remove that would be cost free. Nothing is cheaper than free. Shave 200-300 pounds off the car and you'll be going faster without even pulling a valvecover or cracking your wallet open.
Or, if gutted cars aren't your thing, you could spray it.

Go with a larger stall torque converter. If you go with something around a 3500 stall, you will see a drop of .5 in your 1/4 which is MAJOR! The stall will allow you to leave at higher rpm's, (in a better power band).

ahh so a torque converter and stall are the same thing, thanks for the clear up.
also I have been looking at some cams in the Parts for Sale threads and they seem pretty cheap, but I have some questions how easy are they to install? and what kind of improvements would I see?
hows this one?:

If you are thinking about going with a cam, you are going to want to let the car breathe more, to get more out of the cam. If you do a cam, you will need a stall. Again to get the power out of it.
If you install the cam yourself, you are looking at the min of around $400 for the tune alone. NOt to mention, you will need the new valve springs and etc. Which means a couple humdred dollars.
If your on a budget, the best bang for the buck would be a stall.

thanks, nevermind about the cam then. I will look into some stalls.
then there are shift kits: https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...&highlight=LT1
now dont they hold a gear for longer or somthing like that? I dont know. but again how do they work? and how easy to install.
sorry if I sound lazy and dumb but im not too mechanically inclined, but yet im not afraid to do small work on my car. (new egr, pcv valve and rear brakes all by my self)
thanks for all the info you have been giving me, it may seem small but its really helpful.

would a stall put any more stress on the tranny? or does it actually make it stronger?
plus how do you work a stall/conveter
i have read a lot of stories about stalls and it seems they can work miracles

It does make a big difference. I would strongly suggest getting a transcooler and a trans temp guage to watch the temp. The stall will cause the trans to run hotter, that is why you will need the cooler.

The best thing you can do on a budget is actually sit down first and plan out what you want for your car.
1.) what are you going to be using it for? (track/dd/autox/etc)
2.) what characteristics do you need to be faster? (suspension, power, braking)
3.) talk with someone who knows cars and they can tell you what order to do mods
If you want power then plan it that way. For any engine, air flow is key. Focus first on your intake/exhaust setup. A car needs to be able to pull in and evacuate more air to make more power.
The best thing you can do is start learning the basics of building a car up. Learn how the mix of air and fuel play into a car making power and how to keep the balance during the build up. You can have all the air you could possibly need but without the proper fuel setup and supportin modifications you wont make more power. Use the internet to learn the ins and outs.
