Default 7k is my budget, LS1 or LT1? or Civic :(

I have exactly 7000 dollars in cash right now. My question is; can I find a good LS1 with around 90,000 miles? Would I have to resort with finding an LT1? Or, should I just get a EG Civic and turbo it and make it as fast as LS1 cars?

definatley scrap the civic idea! and im sure if u look on here and in your local papers u can find an LS1 in your price range although the miles may not be exactly what u want, or u could probably get a nicely modded LT1 for that price

Since I am in college I can't make as much money as I used to, so I can probley get in like 20 hrs of work each week at 8 an hour. About 270 excluding taxes every 2 weeks which is when I get paid. Affording insurance wouldn't be that bad right? I have a clean record and my dad is like 55 and a clean record so if I put the car under his name I bet the insurance would be affordable?

Does anyone else have a situation like mine that could give me a little estimate on the insurance? Because if I could afford the insurance I could convince my parents to let me purchase the vehicle. I currently own a 98 Pontiac Bonneville SE which is supposed to get 29 MPG, and the LS1 cars are supposed to get 30 MPG and they are V8's! It is a car I want, and it would actually be saving me money on gas and if the insurance wasn't too bad I could probley get one.

The civic with a turbo is a bad idea as far as from a reliability/mechanical standpoint.

If I were in your shoes I'd try to find a decent LS1 (probably a stripper camaro).

civic with a stock n/a k series(rsx type s). it'll move just as fast as a stock lt1..if not a lil quicker...get insanely good gas mileage and be really realyl good on insurance...plus you can drive it year round. if you don't wanna go with that get a lt1...the ls1 will probably have really really high mileage and may require stuff that you can't afford..clutch, brakes, tranny/engine rebuild.

with insurance costs and all considered...get a nice LT1, maybe even a 97 30th anniversary with some miles on it but still under 100k. if its your daily driver, get the LT1 that has less than 80k miles. LS1 with less than 100k miles and dont think about the civic

LS1 > LT1 > anything else > civic

i am in about the same situation you are. im 19 now and bought my LT1 with $7,000 cash when i was 17. my LT1 had a lot of problems. im not saying the LT1 is a bad motor, im just saying my car had issues. But anyway, a little after i turned 18 i sold my T/A LT1 for $7,000. Took the $7k in cash and took out a 3 year loan for another $7k. turned out i bought my all-options (power everything, ttops, leather, etc, etc) Z28 with 69,000 miles and a brand new dealer installed 6speed with all the paperwork for $10600. I then took the extra money and bought cat-back, headers, Lid, shifter, and gears. As of now, i have been making payments of $210 a month for almost a year. I also go to college full time during the day and work at nights. i pull only about $150 per week from work after taxes. I pay $170 a month with geico with a perfect record, for insurance. the car is titled in MY name, but i am under my parents insurance policy(also have a perfect record). honestly, you are not going to have much money left over to play with. you will be very low on money if you in the same shoes as me. BUT let me tell you this, I LOVE my car and would not have it any other way. Even if my parents offered to help pay for my car, i wouldnt want them to. i know paying for it on my own will only help me and teach me to be responsible in the long run. Plus as a kid, i would probably end up spending the money on worthless **** anyway. and personally i would rather have a GREAT hobby like working on my car, then blow $150 a week on nothing. sorry about the book man, but it seems you and i are in the same position. good luck. just please dont get the civic haha

7000 is the hard price point. That's right at the place where you can get a REALLY nice low mile or even modded Lt1, or a ragged out high mile LS1.

If it was 8-9k, LS1 for sure.

None of the above. Get a POS car to drive for now (you can get something that runs for $500-1000) and bank the rest somewhere that makes a little interest (savings account, cd's, ect). Then when you graduate and get a kick *** job you can use that money as a down payment on a new Camaro or Corvette

But if you absolutely must have a fast car now then for that money I vote LT1. $7,000 LS1's are not exactly a dime a dozen and most are either extreme high miles or a salvage title. But for 7K you cah get a nice LT1 with relatively decent mileage and probably cheaper car insurance.

Good Luck.

My friend had a very reliable DD civic that ran 11.6@126mph. Solid as houses, but he had about twice your budget in it, why all that hate on civics?

My other friend's civic would own a LOT of cars on this board at the strip. Here is his last dyno run.

Why bash the civics? Bash the idiots who cant mod without neons and 24" spinners, NOT THE CAR!

That's somthing you don't see evey day. Nice. He must have been spinning all the way down the track with only a 11.6 at 126MPH. I know one thing is that for the amount of money he spent on that civic I would probably be faster.

Different friend, different car. The guy on the dyno, Mike, should trap 140+.

heres the problem with spending 7000$ on a civic.. 1) torque is fun which leads into #2) rear drive is fun and then #3)your competition is stock ls1s which 4)they wont look as good as anything with an ls1, not to mention #5) you cant put a 150 shot on stock civic, and #6) two cams adds 10 hp while 1 cam can add over 60 plus #7) good luck launching and lifting the front tires. AND if nothing else persuades you, Ls1s sound bad ***... I suggest you put 5k down on a 50k mile 10-12k car.. 98 or 99 z28.. your payments are generally 200 per 10k.. so figure 100-170 a month.. and 2k is left for anything that needs fixed or performance.. Then if all else fails, get an lt1.

I was in the same boat. My budget was about 8K but I only had 4k cash. I took out a personal loan for 2k and bought a beautiful 94 LT1. I say find an LT1 in real nice shape and scoop it up. And you'll probably have enough left over after your tuneup for a couple mods.

As far as insurance goes, I took out my own policy with Indiana Insurance and back at home over the summer I paid 150 a month for liability. I got her switched to a pleasure vehicle and moved about 75 miles south for college and it dropped to 80 a month. Its nice living and working on campus.

I'd say LS1, my buddy just picked up a 85k mile Mystic Teal Z Auto for $6k in Sarasota. I'd say if you looked hard enough and was patient you will find what you want. Also, about the turbo Civic, I think that you will spend more than $7K, unless you buy a basket case car that will end up costing you the most in the end. Just wait it out and keep searching, it will come if that's what you really want. And you might want to turn this into a poll, even though you will get a very biased vote, it will be for a good reason. Good luck, Tim.

5k down on an LS1 is what i initially did, even though i had the money. i just took out the loan for another 5k and built my credit while i paid it off. good way to get a good car AND build some credit.
