I definitely have piston slap at start up. No oil consumption issues though. I use Mobil1 1 5w30.

I use around a half quart between 3k mile oil changes. I think most of it is from the pvc though. The actch can, can only do so much some oil still gets by.

So far those are some varied responses so far...

There isn't really any "pattern" there either. 2001 burning, 2001 not burning.

Sheesh, I wonder is a lower temperature thermo has anything to do with it? My 1999 stopped burning oil when I had that installed, could just be a coinkydink.

Poll already closed, but here is my story. The car is an 01, manual car. I bought it with about 18K miles on the clock, and the car would burn about 1 quart a month and had 'moderate' piston slap. Around 25-30K miles the piston slap got really bad and the car would burn a quart a week.

I got the car repaired under warranty right before the warranty expired. The dealer replaced several defective piston rings. The car doesn't piston slap anymore, and just daily driving the car it doesn't burn oil, or no more than 1 quart every 3,000 miles. If the car is autocrossed heavily, (high RPM use), the motor will still some oil, but this is perfectly acceptable considering what I am doing to the car IMO.

Edit: At the time, I had found a TSB issued about faulty piston rings, and there was a class action law suit that was filed around the same time I got mine repaired, which is probably why the dealer didn't give me any trouble about it.

my brothers 02 uses less MB1, he bought it with 18k and now has 26k. We first started using MB1 in it. My 01 has 12,900 just started using MB when I got it a few hundred miles ago and mine uses more than his. His really doesn't use any.
