I have always used Mobil 1 5W-30. I bought the 0W-30(or 0W-40...not sure which) once, but never put it in my car because it seemed way too thin. I didn't like it being that thin.......I'm not sure if the 5W-30 will help with your problem or not though...

I honestly would not go below 5W. I dont care what people have to say about GC, I still would not go below a 5W. As for the upper number, 30W is okay as long as its NOT! Mobile 1. If you are bent on M1, 5-40 is the way to go, hands down. PS, what is an "oil consumption problem" 1 qt or are we talking you DRINK the stuff?

5W-40 is a better formulation than 0W-40. stay away from mobil 1 30W's. they're junk oil in comparison to some oils out there, reformulated and downgraded. in fact, all mobil 1's mainstream oil is, including the 0W-40, although it's superior to their 30W's. they still break down very quickly in comparison to good oils like GC 0W-30...which is much thicker than mobil 1 5W-30 and 10W-30 for everyone's information

anyways, if you insisit on using mobil 1, 5W-40 should be your only option if you can find it. otherwise, 0W-40 would default as your second choice.

I knew you would be here sooner or later . Besides GC 0w30. What else is a good oil? If i cant find the M1 5w40.

FYI, 10-30M1 used 1qt per 800 miles in my 5.0 Shell rotella 15-40 used around 1 qt per 1200-1500 miles. My 5.0 is funky, the compression numbers are within 5psi of each other...ALL OF THEM, but it still drinks oil. I have 4.10's and the motor is brand new (20K miles on it) high lift cam, modded to hell. I think tis the revs. Either way, M1 SUCKED! for me. THIN STUFF!

tough to say. i've heard good results with shell rotella, but everything's really a guess. your best bet is honestly to do a used oil analysis and find out the long, hard way what the real best oil for your engine is. no LS1 is exactly the same and clearances differ by very small amounts, but in terms of oil viscosity, it's actually significant. if i were you, i'd buy GC 0W-30, mobil 1 5W-40, shell rotella synthetic 5W-30 or 5W-40, whatever it is they make, and amsoil 5W-40. these should be your best 4 oils. run them all for 4,000 miles and send the oil away to blackstone labs or some other UOA company and find out which protects the best in your LS1. my vote as of now will go to GC 0W-30 as it shows great wear results, but be advised your engine will still tick on it. i'm going to try mobil 1 5W-40 in my next oil change as i have high expectations for that, but i'm going to do a UOA on the GC and mobil 1 5W-30, so we'll see which one scores better.

5-40 synthetic Shell Rotella was recommended to me by Patman over 0-40 M1 if you cant find 5-40 M1. 0-30GC gets 50/50 reviews and has a cult following as well as a cult hating, lol. I have also heard good stuff about Delo, but its a bit harder to find, Shaeffers is some GOOD stuff, as is Amsoil, but both are specialty oils. I would say 5-40M1 or 5-40 shell rotella

PM "Patman" on this website...HE KNOWS ALL!

Im going to the local auto stores to see what they have.(autozone, kragen) It looks like autozone might have M1 5w40. But i'll do some shopping around.

there you go. test these oils:

GC 0W-30
mobil 1 5W-40
shell rotella 5W-40
amsoil 5W-40

these will likely be the best 4 oils for the LS1. from there, do a UOA on each to find out which is best for you. send them away to blackstone labs, it's $20 a pop. so for $80 and 16,000 miles of driving, you'll know the best oil for you

I don't want to start a new thread so im gonna ask my question here

Has anyone started using the GC 0w-30 and devolped leaks compared to M1 10w-30? I know with the 10w-30 a very small leak started to devolop on my rear main seal.

Should i just go with M1 5w-40 or 0w-40

I use 10-30 Red-line since new. No problems, no leaks, and no consumption.

i'd stay away from redline because it's not starburst approved. i've heard redline has good detergents, but i've also heard of problems resulting from running redline oils. if it works for you, that's great, but personally i'd never touch the stuff.

GC 0W-30 is thicker than mobil 1 10W-30 at operating temperatures. if you experience leaks while at operating temperatures with mobil 1 10W-30, theoretically it'll leak less with GC 0W-30 since it's thicker.

mobil 1 5W-40 and 0W-40 really aren't any thicker than GC 0W-30. they're very close with mobil 1 just edging GC out at operating temps.

A guy ruined the trans-axle in his Pantera on redline gear oil IIRC, If you know what those cost, you would **** yourself. It is valued at 1/3 the price of the car.

I would stay starburst approved personally, and LS1's really dont leak like the older chebby's They have some AMAZING gasket technology.
