Exclamation Worried about my car

Well last night tis lil 3000 GT got on my bumper. When we took off at a red light he tried to stay on my bumper so at about 3000 rpms i stomped wot in 1st gear and took off and left him real quick.but when I looked through my mirror I seen a ball of what looked like to black smoke in his head lights. It really worried me because my car only has 35000 miles on it and I dont want to rebuild for a long time.My buddy who was riding with me said its were i never blow it out and all it was, was sut.I only burn about a half a quart of oil about every 3500 miles which figured was pretty normal for these cars. What do you guys think do I have any thing to worry about?

That was kind of hard to read. How big was this "ball of smoke"? Chances are it was just carbon build up from your exhaust, although it shouldn't have been a huge ball it is possible. May have been a mix of oil and carbon?

Now im getting worried again. It was hard for me to tell exactly how big it was but it was deffinately noticable through the other cars headlight and some friends standing around also noticed it. To me it looked kinda big but I think I was paranoid seein it come from my car but my friends didn't say they smelt oil but I dont know .

Did you de-screen the MAF? That can cause a lean issue.

i had the same problem. well not really problem. i think it may be the LM Catback burning out. theres a thin coating of oil or somthing on mine when i got it and put it on and i had some smoke untill it burnt off/out. i got about 3k miles on mine now and it quit puffing smoke on WOT hits.

Time for a re-build---in another 200K. Man, its ok, you wanna see a BIG ball of smoke? Get gehind an EVO VIII, they run PIG rich. All it is is the PCM richening the fuel big time as soon as you go WOT, just a safety measure. It's fine.

bingo..and this guy doesn't even own a ls1 yet. Ls1s run rich stock for safety. Most stock cars that go from little throttle to wot will have a lil black smoke. No biggie. blue and white smoke should worry you..not so much with black smoke. My car has done it since day one when i picked it up with 50k on it. 5k now and going strong.

My 5.0 used to be EFI and I had an adjustable FPR on it and I played with it endlessly. No matter HOW!!! low I set the fpr (lowest I went was like 39) it would still puff when I went WOT for a SPLIT second and there was NO soot in the pipes and I was VERY close to detonation, plugs were dang white. I richened it up pretty quick, lol. Point is, it is normal and just prevents an instant lean condition by causing a quick rich one when you got WOT, that is why dyno graphs a lot of times will show a millisecond dip before it levels out on a WOT pull.

^here is a FI (turbo) dyno that exemplifies this perfectly, notice how the A/F almost drops into the 10's when it is first nailed? Then it quickly raises back to a 12.0-13.0 (safe tune for a turbo). Its all good man, smile, your ECM functions and you wont detonate any time soon

If you are stock, a tune would net you around 10whp or so. Not worth it unless you are modded imho. As a rule, mods to the intake (lid, FTRA, ect) will create a leaner condition and mods to exhaust (headers, cat-back) will create a richer condition. Not by much, we are talking .2-.3 points per mod or so, LT's will make it run pretty rich though. This is a rule of thumb and I am not responsible for anything you do with that info

So if its already a puffin smoke from being rich when i get LT's it'll be alot worst. So im assuming a tune would really be good.

LT's+tune=SWEET
plus you can delete the AIR/EGR/rear O2's from your computer at the same time you are optimizing your engine to work with the headers.
