78 in a 55 isn't so bad. With a 55mph speed limit, I'm assuming this was an expressway. If so, you really don't need to feel guilty about that one. EVERYONE speeds on the expressway. I spend 70 miles every day on the expressway commuting, and when the traffic is light, we ALL are doing well over 70mph in a 55 zone. Hell, some days I'm doing more like 85-90mph in the 55 zone. I can't recall seeing one person on my local expressways ever doing 55mph unless heavy traffic/bad weather didn't permit going any faster. Even the state troopers do 70+ all the time.

You just have to be smart about where you do it, and don't do that when driving a "hot" looking car.

75 in a 55 = easy ticket for a Camaro/Firebird driver.

75 in a 55 = cop not looking twice at the Bonneville driver.

When driving my Camaro, I never speed anywhere near as much as in my Bonneville.

ha, its ok man. Been there doen that. You are young and are gonna do stupid stuff. I was the same exact way and no matter what anyone told me i was gonna speed and spin the tires and flex my muscle whenever i got a chance. Just be smart when and where to do so and it will save you some trouble asnd money. Live and learn buddy, live and learn...

Yes it was on a highway. And, had i seen the cop, i would have promply slowed down, but i didnt think 78 was insanely stupid, to be honest. Thanks for the kind words. hah

In that occurance, I don't think you were being stuipd either; what IS stupid is the 55mph limits on these expressways. The roads are built to handle much higher speeds, and cars these days have much better saftey equpitment to handle collisions.

Many areas that used to be 55mph during the federal government mandate have now raised the limits to 70 or 75. It's time that the other states follow suit.

Yes I agree. This highway is 4 lanes, with a 30 ft patch of grass separating the opposing lanes. Hard to do 55 like that. feels like you are going 25. Road is made for higher speeds, like you said.

My thoughts exactly.

Although I'm not one to talk about speeding either.

Interesting how we don't hear about problems on the Autobahn. Where I live we have a lot of problems with cops that are on a power trip, think all of those need to be fired.

Yeah, some cops are on a power trip but it doesn’t appear to me that you were being harassed or pulled over for a BS reason, he was just doing his job…….speeding 20+ over the limit warrants getting pulled over, ****…even arrested in some states.

yeah seriously I'm 22 and had 11 points against me last year after taking a 4 points reduction class. After about 5 grand in tickets/lawyer etc I still have my license and nothing to show for it except a 3200 a year insurance bill....

+1 for being arrested for 30 over...they don't take points in my state when you get arrested so either slow down or go faster and take a day off work/school...

if you don't think stopping speeders is serving, you're an idiot... plain and simple. and i'm not saying you in particular are an idiot, don't take offense to that. i mean the community as a whole.

just last night (about 2am this morning) i had a 17 year old kid flip his explorer into a pole and die, BECAUSE HE WAS SPEEDING. a 17 year old kid. that is stupid and pointless and it doesn't have to happen.

let's get real, everybody speeds. i do 60 on rural highways in 55 zones out of habit. but if you're just cruising home, is it really necessary to do 20+ mph over the speed limit? probably not.

I know what you mean, stopping me was serving the community. but thats not what i was refering to. I was just saying, to cops that are on a head trip, there is no sense. thats all. really nothing to do with my case.

Dude, chill out. You just ran into some serious bad luck. Insurance will suck for the next few years, but that's how this **** works, unfortunatley.

Stop by a lawyer's office real quick one day and tell him your story. See if he might be able to help with anything. Might end up not being as bad as you think.
