Someone shoved wet shirts in my exhaust pipes. Damage?
Two nights ago someone had shoved two wet and muddy t-shirts in my exhaust pipes. The next morning I started my car up as usual and when doing so I noticed the sound of my exhaust was eliminated to a muffle. The car probably ran for only 30 seconds before I decided to shut it off and check out the problem. I was clueless until I saw mud caked around my tips. I then pulled the t-shirts out of the pipes. Do you guys think in that 30 seconds of time that any damage could have been done to my engine? Could doing this really cause problems to an engine?

wow- this is a first i've heard. I don't imagine it could have done anything serious for the short amount of time you had your car running, obviously exhaust was still getting out the pipes- had it of been air tight something would have broke somewhere for all those gases to get out. I'm sure if you did that for too long something bad would happen eventually, but i'de just drive it around a bit and make sure everything seems to be running alright.

I wouldn't worry about it, but I'd suggest that you find the person who did that and jam the shirts up their.... well, you get the picture.

Well if the exhaust cannot escape it will eventually travel backwards into the cylinders and cause the engine to blow. Or I think it could simply overheat the engine too. I'm just wondering if 30 seconds of time will of caused any damage or not. I guess there isn't really an answer, and I will just haft to drive the car to see. Anyone else have an opinion?

it woulda done piston damage real fast if it blocked off air flow, i had potatoes stuck in mine once and my car was on for 30 seconds or less before my **** got all fucked up, i wouldn't worry if you still haven't experienced any problems after driving it around for awhile, the damage was realllly noticable

Shirts are breathable, they were not completely blocking the exhaust, just slowing it down. Take any shirt and, with your hand on the other side, blow air though it. Notice that you still feel the air? It just takes a little more effort to blow through the fabric.
I'm sure that your motor is fine.

Nah, I doubt it caused any problems.
Especially considering it was only at idle and for that short amount of time.
I would definitely be concerned with who did it though......That's a "I want this person to get messed up" kinda move, not a "haha this will be funny" friendly kinda thing.

RPM WS6: I believe that's why they had gotten the shirt wet and packed it with mud. SO there wouldn't be any exhaust flow or movement. But you guys are right, I don't believe there is any damage done. Drove the car today and it seems fine.
