Join the military, deploy, and come back home to a car and tons of go-fast parts waiting for you. Make sure you get a bonus when you join too.

I just re-enlisted, and my bonus is paying of one of the cars

If I wasn't going to college for engineering, this would be the route I would take. Either the Marines or Air Force for me. Hopefully I don't run out of money to pay for the next 3 years of college The serious mods will have to wait until i get my degree. Then there's always the 2009+ Camaro that will be out when i graduate

I pretty much work all the time. My primary job pays very well (Six figures) and my second job was a hobby and has become a full time job on my days off. So to say the least I work my *** of for my parts.

beg, barter, and steal. j/k i do the same as 5_02ls1 does but i have a truck i take a loan against and tell the bank its for home improvements, lol. i usually pay it off within 5-6 months. but when im deployed i pay the normal bills off first, then with whats left it sits in the bank til i see what i want. come home spend a few weeks thrashing and waiting to get it going. then i just sit there and listen, to the sweet sound of victory. but what ever you do if you join the army dont be a damn mechanic. get a personel job get paid just the same 1/2 the bullshit.

working in a plant doing construction= 7-10s = 1,800 bring home a week. I could have paid my car off by now if I would have bought all the other good stuff. I broke the 10k dollar mark 3 weeks ago. I have had the car 9 months.

This is what I did and I was putting away 1500 a month for whatever I'd want in the near future. For some reason I joined the military and only put away about 700 a month now.

Pretty much don't spend your money during the week and spend a little on the weekends...

This is where it got me

22 with a 2000 Z28 paid cash and an extra 12k sitting in the bank waiting to be used on something else. I see a xbox 360 and 42" tv in my future. I don't know what to do next with the Z though

Based on experience I really don't think that is worth it.

i'll take a shot at the OP's original question. my opinion is that it's a combination of things. i'll put them in the order i think they belong (#1 is the most likely scenario, #4 the least):

1.) a lot of guys buy cheaper parts. this IMO is the majority on here. shelf cams (ex. TR224, MS3), pacesetter headers, ported heads, etc...they run the stock trans and rear til they blow, they reuse stock gaskets, O2 sensors, bolts, etc...really budget builds. they're not buying AFR heads and a custom grind cam in into QTP headers and stainless true duals.

2.) a lot of guys on this site are in debt over their car, some guys pretty badly. i OWN my car 100%. my personal view is that it is better to own a 13 second car than to be in debt over an 11 second car. i really am not that thrilled over a fast car that the bank owns. i shake my head at the people that are blowing their money left and right on a car. then they rag on you because you're slower. yea, well i have money in the bank, i have full coverage insurance and my car can't get repo'd...but enough ranting. different strokes for different folks.

3.) some guys on this site aren't married and don't have kids, which opens up a lot of funds. plus, this is their only hobby, so it's their only outlet for spending money.

4.) some people (*cough* tony *cough*) have a lot of money and can afford it. i wish i was that lucky...

good credit is your friend....
this is the deadliest post in the thread IMO. a loan for mods? if you have to finance for mods, or if you EVER have to use a credit card because you don't have the money yet, my advice to you is DON'T BUY IT. i spent almost $800 on headers. guess what? i wrote a check for them when the bill came because i set the money aside. preparation is key. no amount of horsepower is worth going into debt over.

credit is good, but please, be smart about it. i don't wanna see anyone losing their car over this stuff
