Best Time to Buy a T/A?
Hey, I'm currently a mustang owner looking to get into the LS1 world. Never really liked the looks of the camaro's but my cousin has a T/A and it's way sweet! I live in MN and go to school in AZ and right now all the Trans Am's are listed extremely high for their mileages from what I remember them going for a couple years ago when I was looking at them. Ideally I'm looking for a Black or White WS6 M6 w/ T-tops. How can I get the best deal? Should I wait until winter? Thanks in advance guys.

look on the forum here. always amazing deals to be had on here, you just have to be a little patient to find exactly what you want where you want it. Technically the best time to buy is in the winter, usually all prices go down then, but there are great deals popping up all the time.

I don't see many for sale around here during the winter. Wait until the end of the summer/beginning of fall to get a deal. Don't worry about extremely low mileage, just make sure the body/engine is in good condition. These cars/engines will last well over 100k miles. Ideally around 50-70k will be the best deal for the money. Don't wait for a WS6 though. If you find a decent regular Trans Am or even a Formula go for it Good luck.
By the way I believe all Trans Am's have T-Tops. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
Listings:

http://www.cars.com
http://www.ebaymotors.com
Pricing:

http://www.kbb.com

not all trans ams have t-tops.
I know prices go down in the Winter on sites like autotrader, etc.
as far as not waiting. I don't know, I would advise waiting for exactly what you want. I bought my car because it was a good deal, but it is an Auto and I really want an M6. Everytime I think about it, I just want the M6 more, so when it becomes more feasible I will probably be putting my car up for sale to get an LS1 M6 (i am trying to trade for them now w/cash). I would advise waiting for exactly what you want so you don't regret it later.

Here is some info on the differences between the T/A and Formula
The T/A and formula have differnt front and rear bumpers and the T/A also has side skirts. The T/A also costs more than the Formula.
T/A
Auto comes with 3.23 in the rear dif
Leather Interior is standard
T-tops are standard
Chrome Wheels standard
Formula
Auto comes with 2.73 in the rear, but can be optioned with 3.23 in the rear
Leather is optional
T-Tops are optional
Silver painted wheels standard, Chrome Wheels optional
Firehawk (98 + models)
Available on T/A 98+ (not sure about after 2000)
Available on Formula 98+
WS6 (98+ models)
Available on T/A 98+
Available on Fomula 98-2000
Those are the biggest differences. There most likely are others (radio?). Make sure you get a CarFax (www.carfax.com) to make sure that the car in question is a true T/A or Formula and to see its history (accidents, etc.). Sometimes the dealership will pay for a CarFax. A dealership once tried to sell me what looked like a T/A WS6 but had the VIN of a stock Formula. They did pay for a CarFax and thats when I noticed the fraud. They shot themselves in the foot (figuratively). I went to another dealership and bought a new Formula. The freebee CarFax should at least tell you the Make and Model of the car, which would tell you if its a T/A or Formula.

It always seems like we have more of em' for sale in the winter.. probably because they are not made for the snow..
But like someone mentioned above, there are almost always some good deals in the classified forums!
