Default What makes an LS1 an LS1?

What do y'all think? People think LS1, they think "one of the biggest small blocks" or "Trans Am/Camaro" etc.... but what really makes an LS1 so special?

Don't get me wrong, not denying it's omnipotence, just curious to what the majority of the people think when they hear "LS1".

I think GenIII based, 5.7L GM V8 engine.

True, but you know how some engines have that defining characterstic that distinguishes itself from the majority of other engines? I was just curious if the LS1 or any LSx had one. Kind of a deeper question, not really surface.

Don't get me wrong, not denying it's omniscience, just curious to what the majority of the people think when they hear "LS1".
I highly doubt its "omniscience." Its badass, but it doesn't know everything... for omniscience... please consult the the magic 8 ball.

Now omnipotence would be a much better term.

What defines it I guess is the ability of the block to run more efficiently than the previous generations... New architechture... along with it being aluminum, unlike its cast-iron precursors.

When I think of the LS1, I think of my car and how she loves to be taken to the redline every damn day, and practically screams at me in the parking lot to get back in and drive the **** out of her.

Well the fact that the only thing it has in common with your typical old small block is the main caps, which are still somewhat different, really the whole damn thing distinguishes itself.

all aluminum, easy to mod, great stock performance, good gas milage when compared to older V8's, and screams up to 6000 RPM. Not to mention 500 HP is very easily obtained with heads and a cam.

I think this is what you're looking for...

This thread outlines some of the advantages of the LS1 over a traditional Gen I small block:

It's aluminum, 6 bolt main, there's no coolant in the intake, lifters are under the damn heads, oil pump is on the crank, different ports, responds well to mods, one of the strongest cranks, non adjustable rockers, and the bitch takes a beating and doesn't talk back.

Isn't the LS1 a few cubes smaller then 350 small blocks of the past?

346 vs 349?
