Default Car really messed up. Help please!

Get in it this morning to start it and turn it to the run position the gauges and everything light up then turn it to the next position to crank it and the gauges die and the clusters go blank except for check gauges and service engine soon.

I know service engine soon was on just because it was in run but not running.

The battery was replaced about 3-4 months ago and had it checked and it was fine.

The guy at autozone said maybe the starter but Ive heard about key ignition problems.

Anyone with a fix will be greatly appreciated.

No it doesnt even attempt to turn over.
When switching from run to start the gauges all but those mentioned go blank.
When turned from run to start there is a small 1 time tick coming from the drivers side under the hood.

yeah there usually a tick somewhere. i want to say nuetral safety start switch may be disconnected. did the car ever gradually seem to not want to start? if so then its prolly a starter issue. neutral safety switch is a plug on the side of the transmission it has to be connected or the car wont start. went through that with my dads truck one day when i tried to leave school and the damn truck wouldnt start. it did basically what you told me with the gauges.

Well it first hit me as a dead battery cause the amps were a little off but the battery is almost new and its good because i had it checked.

The guy at autozone said starter and a good friend of my dads to just sold a truck to my dad today said it was a starter.

I let him get in it turn it on and after going back and forth 3-4 times he just got out closed the door and said starter hands down.

So I believe I will be replacing the starter this weekend. If that doesnt work ill go the neutral plug.

Thanks so much.

Did you already try jumping the starter with a screwdriver?
Also test light on the purple wire with someone turning the key to crank.
Thats usually what I do before I condemn a starter.

is the security light on?

do you have any spare keys?

the vats system will disable the car killing the fuel pump and starter. if you have a spare key..try that..if you don't, go to the dealer adn get one made up..i think its between 30-40 dollars and try that.

Check your grounds, had a similar thing happen once and the ground cable on the battery was not quite tight enough - moved it and everything cam back on, drove it home tightened it up, just check it occassionally now. Have gone through most of the other grounds I could find - loosened em, cleaned em up and retightened them just to make sure.........

I would definitely check all the ground cables first before spending money. Do a lil trouble shooting before throwing parts at it.

Is the neutral safety switch on the passenger or driver side of the transmission?

Isn't the neutral safety switch under the center console? I can't remember now.

it's a connection somewhere, or not enough juice from the battery. It wouldn't click if it were the neutral safety switch. Check your battery connections, pull them off and clean them -terminal side and battery side and put them back on. Then try to jump start it. If that doesn't work check your starter connections

The battery is only 3-4 months old and ive already removed both positive and negative ends to the battery and cleaned them. The positive had a little bit of corrosion but not enough to make a difference in starting or not. But I still have to get under the car and to the starter.

ive had ground and starter problems but they act the same as a neutral switch undone. crazy way also for security purposes also if you want to be really bout it. a dumbass would never figure that out.
