you hook up a good strenght rope to it and connect it to like 4 honda civics and use them instead of empty cans on your wedding day.

It's a child car seat hook. The government mandated them in '99 or '00. My '00 has them, and my buddie's '98 doesn't.

They are cargo tiedowns. The LATCH system for baby seats was not available ever on the F-body. They WILL NOT work with a LATCH baby seat. DO NOT try to use LATCH tiedowns with this hook.

BTW, LATCH wasn't mandated by the government until September 1, 2002.

Although not available on the 4th gen, the 5th gen will have the LATCH system.

These were the only vehicles prior to the mandate that had LATCH available:

Buick Century, LeSabre, Regal and Rendezvous
Cadillac DeVille and Escalade
Chevrolet Impala, Malibu and Monte Carlo
Chevy Venture, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe
GMC Sierra and Yukon XL
Pontiac Aztek, Grand AM, Bonneville and Montana
Oldsmobile Alero, Aurora, and Silhouette
Saturn L-Series and VUE
Saab 9-3 and 9-5

BTW, GM didn't introduce LATCH on it's vehicles until the 2002 model year. And only on those listed above. LATCH has THREE mounting points, 2 lower and one upper. Case in point: F-bodies do not have the required 2 lower attaching points.......which doesn't matter anyway, because the cargo tiedown isn't located properly to be used with LATCH anyway.

It's either for the flux capacitor or a child safety seat strap.

It is a tie down for the child seat. It is the same as the one in my Accord and My jeep. The latch system you are talking about is under the back seats and uses a strap instead of the seat belts to hold in the car seats.

I should know I have 2 childern and used their car seats in the SS. The Jeep and Honda have the strap attachment under the seats for the car seats as well as the back ones.

It's on page 1-38 in your owners manual (for 02 cars). Securing a Child Restraint in a Rear Seat Position.

Or it could be for racing harnesses for the passengers in the rear seat.

I stand by my original assumption. It's for mounting the "Flux Capacitor"
