Is a dyno tune worth the money?

Is a dyno tune worth the money?
I was thinking about going and getting my car dyno'd the other day just get get a baseline number. Then I thought, while i'm there, might as well just have it tuned.
What I'm basically asking is, Is it worth spending money for a dyno tune?
Also, I was wondering what kind of abuse your car would go through (if any) when they dyno it and/or possibly tune it. Do they go WOT on the dyno?
My car that would be tuned is a 98 Z28 (6 speed).. Has intake and exhaust upgrades. Pretty much stock but I would still like to see where I'm at though.

From the sounds of it though, It seems like you guys are the best of the best.
I got another question for you.. How much more horsepower do you typically get from a dyno tune?

If you have done some bigger mods, then its worth it. I finished my longtubes and intake and the car wasnt running as good as it could, the shift points werent where they needed to be, so I was constantly hitting the rev limiter due to the 3600 converter, got it dyno tuned and the car is a whole new animal. It was definitly worth it in my case.

even if you dont get the tune, i put mine on there stock just to get a baseline and check out a/f. If you bought your car used like me it can tell alof about the car if the motor is running well. And alot of people get tuned with mods but regret not having a baseling to compare to. I think a tune is always worth the money

We generally charge around $300 flat rate for dyno time and tuning , I have gotten 30-40 rwhp tuning bolt on cars , but this only happens usually a couple of times a year and is usually because the car has some issues that I take care of along with the tuning that show up with the logs . But generally a bolt on car with no issues you will get 5-10 rwhp with a tune . Another benefit you generally get from having the car will be better consistancy of performance as well which is a huge plus for bracket racers .

Conversely, only very small numbers may be the result with some simple bolt on engines. Personally I hesitate to take my h/c car to a dyno for tuning. I'd be depressed to see $500 / 5 hp. That's why I bought a wideband and tuner that can adjust fuel, injector slope, PE and timing. But I'm still here to

most tuners charge about 1/2 the price for any other tuning...
my tuner charges $500 for a full dyno/street tune takes about 5-6 hours.
and then $250 for anything else at any time if i change something...
another one charges $300 and then $150...
so i say its worth it anytime.

I'm a bit biased but yes I think it's worth the money. A full dyno/street tune really maximizes your car at any step of the way, stock, bolt-ons, or fully modded...makes it a lot more enjoyable in my opinion. Plus it's not just the peak power that matters, you get a lot more down low too, and that's where you really notice it.
Very few dyno tuners charge you the same thing every time...so even though you may pay $300-$500 for your first tune, usually they cut you a break when you put it on again to have it retuned for other mods.
