My 99 SS did not require the clutch to be pushed in to start the car, however my 98 z and also my buddies 01 ss does. Is this a one year deal, or was that car just a freak? Always been curious about this....

Its always requried to push the clutch down unless you bypass the circuitry to install a remote start system, which basically fools the cars on board computer to think its okay to start.

There's a safety switch on the clutch linkage that won't allow the starter to crank unless it's been tripped. Jump that switch and you no longer have to push in the clutch to start the car......just make sure it's not in gear when you start it!! I don't know if the pcm references that switch or not......

The safety switch on the clutch is either faulty or bypassed. I started driving manual transmissions when I was 7 yr. old, long before the lawyers thought up the safety switches. They can be a PITA sometimes but so can starting your car in gear when you don't expect it to take off inside the garage.

The switch is on the firewall under the pedal arm. The pcm does not reference it. There was a bit of debate about this in the A4 to M6 swap sticky. There are switches on top of the pedal and the pcm references them, but they have nothing to do with the starting circuit.
Heres the only pic I could find it's not mine. The switch is the lower one.
