Default tested my exhausts decibels

Have a decibel tester here at work for the day to monitor noise levels just for today. I decided to take it out with me at break time and have someone hold it behind my car while I started it up and gave a few revs. My setup is Pacesetter LT's, ORY, and Loudmouth I. Hit 100 dB on a cold start-up and cold idle and 140 dB when I shot some revs off. Would have liked to take it with me in the car to see how bad it was, but don't think I will. Anyway just thought I would pass that info along.

140 DB? Wow... wonder how loud mine is then? I would think yours would be a little quieter.

Looks like you are only about 2 hours away, you can drive up here and find out, lol.

So I guess by OSHA standards people driving behind me should be wearing ear plugs.

140dB? That's many times the loudness that can cause irreversible hearing loss

Don't forget, every 3dB means it's double the loudness, so a 140dB car is twice as loud as a 137dB car. Your exhaust is several times louder than some competition subwoofers.

Throw in a H/C package and post up the level

MS3 cam with LT's ORY and loudmouth 1 on a warm idle from 10 feet back i was 102db. Then from about 30 feet back i was around 83db and at the pipe it was like 115db. Didnt get a chance to test it on a rev because the meter maxed out at 135 and that was like nothing. I never knew mine was that loud either.

theoretically it's twice as loud, ask your ears if it's twice as loud, they won't agree.

there is no way that exhaust is 140 db any where thats not in the pipe, at least not a true 140db, don't believe what the walmart meters say.

anyone ever been to an NHRA drag race? now those are loud.

Well that is what the guy that was holding the meter told me he saw it flash up to. He had the thing pretty close the the tip, couldn't tell how close as I was inside the car. And yeah it was a lot higher than I thought it would be. Plus given the fact that it was a cold start up, that figure was probably higher than if it was at normal idle. And it wasn't a scientific test, just ran out there at breaktime and threw a few revs at the thing.

After I posted it I looked it up and a jet engine is like 130 dB. And I know its not that loud, but with the guy holding it where he was and at 4500 rpm on a cold start, thats what he said it flashed up to.

that reading seems off. i mean i call tell you my quad is louder than most cars out there, for sure louder than my truck. and at races it has tested at 108 db 3 ft from teh outlet, reved approx. halfway to redline. my quad is LOUD! and not many street cars are that loud. seems off to me.

It's not "theoretically." That's how it is. If you go from 137dB to 140dB, it is twice as loud. Your ears just have a very narrow range of hearing and they're not 100% efficient, either. Humans have terrible hearing compared to nearly every animal on the planet that can hear. You can't hear a lot of the vibrations your exhaust makes. It's twice as loud, regardless of what your ears tell you.
