If i installed a cam would it decrease my gas mileage?

No really it depends on a lot of factors like your style of driving,size of cam,supporting mods.
Straight up answer, probably not unless you go wild w/ cam.

OK then what kind of cam would an ls1 use that is not over the top?

224/224 or smaller???????? and depending on your tune also and also the mods goin with your cam

Just kidding about it being a dumb ?. How else are you going to learn if you dont ask, right?
I think King Nothing got it about right, Maybe 228r or smaller on a 114 lsa Would make good power I know it feels like a beast in my car.
I cant really attest to mileage because I now have 4.56's.

Being that you are an automatic and have a stall you probably will drop a little mileage but you are already suffering in the "MPG" department anyways. Since I'm an M6 i get ~25-26MPG on avg with normal driving. Mods in sig.

Just remember that an engine is basically an air pump. Bigger the cam the more air in and the more fuel that will be needed to support it, of course there are some exceptions for more the most part bigger cam will hurt your MPG's

Short answer? Yes.
However, you could do a relatively mild cam that would give you a good HP increase-to-MPG lost ratio. It's all in the priorities...
