So the suburban has 1 piston? lol. on a more serious note I thought they were just the order codes. Just what they call the packages.

It's the RPO code for the option package ordered. RPO code Z28 became so popular that GM decided to market it.

Z28, WS6, LS1, etc.

All are RPOs (Regular Production Order/Options) found on the SPID (Service Parts Identification) sticker. They are just codes, not acronyms.

Default agree

originally the z28 was the rpo code for a v8 engine and heavy duty suspension and was called the z28 because that option box was located directly under rpo code.....z27.

The "28" in z-28 comes from the days when GM was heavily involved in trans-am racing.
There was a mandated max 5.0 liter displacement.

Chevrolet put 283 v8's in the camaros and stroked them to 302.

The 28 comes from the 283 cid engine used.

Rumor.

Just like the rumors about what ZR1 "stood" for.

Again, these codes are NOT acronyms, they are just codes.

So very, very true. People who are saying it's an RPO code have been disillusioned. Take the Z71 truck for example. 7+1=8 cylinders. Anyone can see that.

Yes and No
The Z28 RPO was originally for the 290 HP 302 V8 built for SCCA Trans Am Racing series to fit under the 5.0 litre limit.
The 302 is a 327 Block with a Steel 283 Crank, Pink Rods, 11:1 pistons, Fuelie 327 Heads, and solid lifter Duntov cam.
This engine option required a mandatory 4spd manual trans and standard 3.73 or lower optional gears. Also included special cooling and handling packages.

i dont think the numbers actually stand for anything in particular today, just marketing, something to brand on something, i mean look at SS, it has really gotten watered down, SS don't mean nothing anymore. look at dodge with HEMI, or the names charger, and challenger. its all marketing bs to make people but cars. period. it all used to mean something.....ah how times change.
