I cant beleive such a massive debate on how to jump start a ****** car.

just hook it up to the battery, me and gramps have jumped so many cars I couldnt even count them on all in a year using the battery posts and never had an issue.

I use to ground to the chassis or block somewhere but I just gave up doing that and use the battery ground. Never had any probs.

Like already said the whole reason why you should use a ground on the car opposed to the one on the terminal is IF there is a spark THERE IS A SMALL POSSIBILITY that there could be fumes from the batery that can go BOOM and blow the battery. Like already stated you may have a better chance of gettin struck with lightning but why take the risk if you dont have to

the reason you avoid using the battery is to a) avoid spark in a potential fire situation from igniting gases from a leaky battery. (0.0000001% chance)
b) there's less resistance if directly attached to chassis or engine (negative connection)
c) GM puts a positive lead for you to use in jump situations as well which is closer to the alternator...
