They stay open fine normally. There is a detent that keeps it open with nothing in it and when you make a hard left turn. There is also supposed to be a spring that pushes that wire down when opened. Sounds like yours is a little worn. You might be able to tighten it back up to like new.

^^ Thank you, mine must be old/worn or somethings broken. I always wondered if it was supposed to be like that cause that is why I considered that the "useless" one; it never stays open!

the useless cup holder on manual transmission cars is the cup holder in the center console, theres no way to get your arm past a drink to shift. the slide out cup holder is the only one us m6 guys use

My flip-out one is worn or something from the previous owner. It stays out OK but feels so loose and wobbly I wouldn't really trust it with anything.

The useless one is definately the center console one for us M6 guys.

Does anyone ever use the two in the back? I find they come in handy sometimes...

Even for us A4 guys it still gets in the way a little when shifting.

I used the holders in the back to hold screws, wires, and such while I was doing the sail panel speaker swaps. Actually, I think there might still be a spare screw rolling around in the one....

lol yeah i opened this thread expecting the useless one to be the middle console cupholder. I only put drinks in the rear passenger cupholders or the pop out one. I like the pop out cupholder and think it holds drinks pretty well. the console one i use for cellphone, keys, change, etc like everybody else. A lot of people have said they didnt even realize they had a pop out cupholder. lol

Same here! Even though I have an A4 I still rest my hand on the shifter all the time so having anything in the center bugs me. Only problem is the Flip out one becomes useless when I've got the Laptop mount on for tuning.

The flip out one gets used all the time! It works great!

When people talk about the useless one, they are talking about the one in the console, for reasons stated.
