I use Pennzoil Platinum in my Trans Am, and Royal Purple in my blown SS. I only use Royal Purple in my SS since the previous owner used it. Pricey, but I think it's worth it, especially if you are seriously modded. For a DD with mods here and there, I think either Mobil 1 or PP will do.

I switch between Royal Purple 10w30 and Pennzoil Platinum 10w30. I go about 2 oil changes with Pennsoil to every one of the RP. The RP has more detergents and is a very good oil for treating your seals and removing deposits while the Pennzoil is a better lubricant. The used oil analysis shows the Pennzoil to be just as good as Mobile 1 while it's quite a bit cheaper.
I go with a little bit thicker oil due to it's ability to resist breakdown. The only reason manufacturers go with 5w30 is to aid the MPG and keep the EPA happy. the 10w30 offers better protection without clogging.
I've got 108,xxx miles on my LS1 and she still runs like new. I don't even have the piston slap on start up I hear on many other LS1s. I figure I'm doing something right.
Oh, and I run RP throughout the rest of my driveline (2000 Z28, M6).
cookba, where can I order the German Castrol.

German Castrol can be found at autozone. They stopped making it so it is pretty hard to find. If you search hard enough you will probably find some though. Make sure it say made in grmany on the back

Castrol GTX or Havloine 10w-30. I don't run extended OCIs so I will run the dino based stuff without a second thought. I do spluge for a decent filter - Purolator or WIX. (the long filter used on GM trucks)
