So to clarify, they will play burnt cd's with up to around 20ish full length songs after they have been converted with the proper software on your computer BUT, they will NOT play data cd's with around 150 or more songs in .MP3 form. Now lock the thread lol, because I keep seeing it towards the top of the forum thinking no way will that work. (data cd in a 9 year old stock cd player)

when you burn mp3's to make an audio cd (18 - 20 songs) you change the origional format, which is mp3 into a wav format. Well the program you use to burn the CD does it automatically. When you choose to burn it as a data cd and keep the origional format (mp3), which is much smaller, then you can fit 150 songs on a cd. And many CD players in new cars have the option of hearing mp3 cds (the 150 kind)

Exactly right! Auto makers didn't start making radios that can play mp3 data cd's untill sometime around 03 or 04.

So much confusion, 98-02 did not have any mp3 playback built in any deck.
They are simply audio redbook format CD's. Not wav, mp3 or anything. If you don't believe me, try "copying" the files you find on a cd. You will get nothing. Now if you "rip" them to a wave format, or skip that and rip to mp3, that's different.
If you use your computer to make an audio CD, ie 80 mins of music burned onto a disc, it will play. This is known as a "burnt" cd, not an mp3 cd.
An mp3 cd is a data disc holding a windows file format system. Each file is stored as something you can browse in explorer like "This song.mp3". Average song will have a file size of 4-5mb depending on quality and length. With a 700mb/80min disc the 700mb file format will hold a lot more songs or a lot more songs time wise.
