Power + street tires = bad traction.

When I did the heads/cam (before the rear and drag radials), I scared myself and a friend downshifting to 2nd at 55 and going sideways.

I definitely like good traction over bad.

When I think / talk about breaking loose at a certain speed, I mean you're rolling at that speed at whatever gear you're in and punch it.

When you downshift / upshift and spin it's a lot different as the clutch is free, the motor is revving and then you re enguage the clutch. It's a lot harder to be in 3rd gear at 60 - 65, jump on it and break the tires loose. I have (had) well over 500 horse in a 3200lb car and like i said it was 50 / 50 whether or not I could spin at 60 on 315 Nitto's. Street tires there would be no question they'd spin.

I can do it at 30 mph, but that's really it. At 30 mph, the rear end goes all squirrely. I can't do it at any other speed because my rims are heavy and my tires (275/40/17) are in good shape and have a lot of tread. I simply don't have the power to do it from a higher speed roll.

If your tires are 245's and really bald, you could probably do it with not a whole lot more power than stock if you're on a crappy road and downshift right into the meat of your powerband. If you have good rims and tires, it'll be a lot harder.

When I slam a 1-2 shift, my car fishtails for like half of 2nd gear. Its actaully kinda scary at that speed. Feels like any second its going to whip itself into the curb. Again, im on 315/17 sumitomos

I did it at 65 earlier today with a 3.73 rear gear and all season tires..... pretty easily too.

I've done it at about 70 on street tires (about 60% tread, maybe) in my dad's '94 Z (600-ish hp), and I'll never do it again. Absolutely terrifying. Went straight home and changed my shorts. Then recommended to my dad that we work on the suspension.

I completely agree with silverTA2002, good traction is far better than bad traction.

Street tire's and alot power is a bad idea. I was cruzing with some friend's and they were doing about 80mph,when I came past them at about 100mph,spinning and getting sideway's! Not the smartest thing to do,but it was kinda fun!

When I was talking about mine breaking free, that's with full suspension and 28" Hoosier QTP's. The street is hard enough to hook, using street tires with a lot of power and at the speeds we're talking here, is dangerous and pretty stupid if you ask me. My car does it but I'm trying to get traction. I'll admit it is fun to fish tail going 60mph+, but I definitely wouldn't try setting the car up to do it, especially with street tires.

I know that getting traction is great...but it just makes me wonder about my set up...and my tune... I dont think I ahve anything crazy going on with my suspension. Just the usual mods and upgrades.

Im switching to a different cam before spring I believe. And Im going to look into more cubes... So maybe that will help. haha. I just get frustrated. Or maybe I just dont know how to drive the thing yet...

J.

You have a 228/232 113+1 and ported GM castings.

I also have ported GM castings and a 228/232 112+2.

My cam was specced out by Thunder Racing to move the torque curve higher into the RPM range and go easier on low end torque so I could keep more traction on street tires since I won't put drag radials on it (I want to save the stock rear as long as possible). Your torque peak is even a bit higher than mine.

For me even on on stock 245's 1st is pretty useless, 2nd gear will spin hard IF I shift at the top of first, If I shift when the tires are doing 50 in 1st but the car is only going 35, then yeah, 2nd gear might bark and that's it, and a 2nd gear roll on will haze them on occasion.

But that's what I wanted, when the 315's go on with the new rims in the spring, it should cut that back a bit too. But I guarantee the car will trap 120+ and outrun people spinning with less power than I make.

i dont know if my car would do it at 60mph, (well in buffalo right now it would lol) but after i had my 4k stall put in i was on the "maiden voyage" ... cruising along about 30mph and went wot and the car about went sideways.

but i will say i bet alot of what your seeing is jsut a poorly setup suspension / tire combo, not making rediculous power. not being able to have traction at 60mph is not something you want...

I've chirped the tires and actually broke loose a little bit downshifting to third while going 70. The low traction light also came on.

My car is completely stock (M6) and i can spin the tires through first no matter what, most of the way through second, and if i get lucky they will bark goin in to third. Thats with the stock 245 continental tires.

I don't want to set my car up to do this at all, hence the DR's. I was just wondering, would be nice to do for show purposes though

Sure, its fun to be able to spin, but not smart as all have been saying. Just give your car a punch at 60 in the rain (hypothetically speaking, not actually "telling you" to do it) and see how much fun that is eh? Not at all and it's not gonna win u any races.

its fun no doubt but can be very dangerous. Cold weather and DR's not a good idea
