Third Gen LS1 Swap; Auto or Stick?
I have a 91 RS Vert, I just got a 2002 LS1 and put a TR224/230/112 cam in and 243's with Patriot Dual Gold Springs, I also bought a low mileage 4l60e from a 2001 Z28. I am also getting LTs, Cutouts, 3" Y-pipe to Magnaflow muffler, I have the 4th gen plastic tank/fuel pump, and 4th gen rear with 3.23s. I am guessing I will have around 400rwhp. Does that sound right?
I had a 91 hardtop and it was auto, the tranny went out a few times so I swapped it to a t5. I has a lot more fun, but I fugure with all of this horsepower it is going to be fun either way. And I already have the 4l60e.
I was planning on a Vigilante 3200 for the stall. But now I am wondering if I will wish I had gone with a t56.
I know it's personal preference, just wanted to get some opinions because I have never driven anything with high amounts of power, I also have never driven a stalled auto.
The car will be driven every weekend, and at least a few days during the week at night, I might take it to the track a few times a year, but being a convertible I want it to be safe.
Any input is appreciated, I am sure I will be happy either way, going from 170hp to 400rwhp is a pretty big jump.
Thanks

It will be a street car, I personally have never raced at the track. I am sure I will with this, but I can;t see going very often, I'm not building a race car. Thanks for your input!

Another thing I was worried about was the 6 speed being too hard on the car since it is a convertible, I am going to be installing SFCs, I don't know if it will be enough. I like driving manuals I just have never driven a manualcar that powerful.

i would go with a T56, and this is coming from someone with a stalled auto. a high stall converter is worthless on the strip without drag radials. and i would have questions about the durability of that 4L60E with 400 rwhp especially if you keep adding power. your car should be fine with SFCs, a T56 will be harder on your rear end though. then again if you do get drag radials for the strip with the stalled 4L60E your rear wont like 3000+ rpm launches either.

Structurally, if you do an auto and turn it into a track car then you will probably have to do SFC's anyway since you will be launching the car and whatnot.
Might as well do a T-56. Would be a better corner taker too IMO. Thats just me though, I would love to have a good all around thirdgen.
Post up some pics too!

Thank you for the replies, I am not going to make it a track car. It will mostly be for driving on the weekends.
ads_99ta - do you like your stalled auto for street use?

I'm just making sure before I drop any money into a converter.

That is probably what I will end up doing, because I don't see me having 2500 to drop on a t56, unless I put progress on hold for a bit. the only thing i have to but to get the motor "in" the car right now is a converter, I still have to paint the engine bay and clean it up, maybe if the 4l60e blows in a year or so I can do the swap to t56
