Rev match. Mash the clutch in give the go pedal a quick stab and pull your lower gear. That's the way I've always done it. However if your doing a roll race you should already be in the gear your going to start in. No reason to be downshifting after the race has began. That's a sure way to get the Loss.

You do not need to double clutch our cars. That is why we have synchronizers to line up our gears.

True, you don't HAVE to, but if you do, it's much smoother downshifting. Much, much smoother.

Eh, read post #38, too lazy to type it again. But basically you're not only matching the engine's revs for the next gear, but also the gears in the trans (cluster gear).

If you just rev match, your engine will be the proper speed, but the cluster gear in your tranny will not be, so you get that "lurch" when you downshift.

double clutching is also part of the "heel-toe" maneuver that roadracers do while going around corners for a faster exit.

If you double clutch perfectly, you cannot even tell that you've downshifted - except for the engine ending up at a higher rpm.

My car has 95,000 miles on the stock clutch, and I have been double clutching from the beginning, including learning time....so it's okay to try new things
