Default Downshifting for a roll race? What is the best Technique?

I have done this several different ways. I have downshifted, rev matched, and then slowly relased the clutch until it was fully engaged and then hit it. I have found recently that I seem to get one hell of a launch if I do this a little differently. When roll racing I have been dropping from 4th to second at around 50. I throw in the clutch, get into 2nd, rev her up to just under 5k and dump the clutch. Of course this is going to be harder on the entire car, but the car is just my fun car, not my daily driver. I was just curious what people have the most luck with when downshifting for a roll race.

Just let the clutch out slowly and then the car will be in 2nd at around 4k rpms. Then wait for the three honks and punch it.

^^^what he said, dumping the clutch at that speed and revs is going to kill the clutch or tranny very quickly, and not for much gain over rev matching, easing the clutch out, then punching it

I never rev it before I switch gears. I've got it down to what gear I can go into at what speeds. Otherwise you will hit your rev limiter...GUILTY. If i'm going 50 and i'm in sixth I need to be down to 3rd. I could go down to 2nd if I want to be at 5k rpms. But I always go from 3500-4500 rpms. Now when I in sixth I shift down to 4th and then 3rd. I don't know if that makes the switching gears any less harder on the tranny. But I don't "rev" when downshifting. I push on the gas just enough and ease out of the clutch at the same time. 65mph is my MAX speed when downshifting to 3rd. I can put it into 3rd then stomp on it and let out of the clutch fast like I was shifting normally.

I've only had the car since Feb. of this year so i'm no expert at shifting. Although I've missed a gear 1 time while racing. Not too bad I think. Just imo Don't need to rev while downshifting. It really doesn't do anything but make noise. Just ease into gas and ease out of clutch.

it's easier on all parts involved if you revmatch, otherwise, you are putting an extra load on your clutch/transmission, by having to slow the engine down to their level

I agree on the revmatching, push clutch in, rev up to around where the rpms are going to be then let out clutch

^^^ Basically almost sums up what I said lol. I give just enough gas to keep the rpms where they should be at any speed.

Rev matching is good for the car and for you because you begin to learn what rpms you will be at in which gear and if your gonna do a roll and are going to fast for second you know to go to thrid. Its a learning curve but its good stuff to learn so good luck.

Yeah, you need to rev-match. If I'm at 60, it does not really want to go into 2nd otherwise. I have went from 6th to 2nd before. No big deal if you rev up the engine to get things in sync. It takes a little practice to learn where you need to rev to.

rev match into gear before the honks, then at the 3rd honk mash the gas. Dumping the clutch on the downshift doesnt do anything for you except wear and tear on the car, it doesnt make you any quicker.

For me if I am racing with a buddy or just want to feel the power I am nice and I rev match... If I am cruisin and all of a sudden I see a pair of headlights coming up from behind me I just drop it and go...

my way is:

1. know what gear you want to hit in.
2. downshift to 1 gear above the you want to race in.
3. when you're ready to get down, simultaneously stomp the gas and down shift at the same time.

so if you want to be in 2nd at 60 go ahead and down shift to 3rd, but make sure to rev match it. have your hand on the shifter and be ready. by the time you get to the 3rd count you should be in 2nd and pedal to the medal as well as ready for a quick shift.

I've found that If I'd just stay in high rpm in say 2nd in a 60mph case, my clutch fluid would get too hot and block me out of making shifts all together until it cools off.
