I noted a few other threads around here mentioning a similar scam in other places, but I did not see anything mentioning Cars.com.

There was recently a supposed black 2002 Firebird Formula with 63,000 miles and a Raptor hood for $6300 listed as being in Georgia and the seller claimed to be a soldier in the military that had to dump this car for cheap before "deploying to Iraq from a military base in California in a few weeks" and claimed that he was too busy "training" for his deployment to let people see the car in person or to talk on the phone and that he could not send additional photos. He also wanted to use Cars.com as a supposed middle-man in a transaction that he could arrange free shipping on through the military but needed to know as soon as possible and wanted my name and address to ship the car to! Cars.com informed me that it was originally posted on a stolen credit card and they are notifying people that they logged as having contacted the seller. Hopefully nobody got taken on this and I just wanted to put this out there as a general heads-up, FYI warning to be careful.

I had the same thing happen on autotrader. The seller had the car listed as being in Oklahoma, but the seller emailed me with a very similar story. He is stationed in Alaska & can have the car shipped for no charge of course through the military. He sent me several pics of the car, 01 SS NBM with 14k on it for $10,900. I was to pay $2900 down, through yahoo autos escrow service(this service does not exist). Then he would ship the car & I have 5 days to inspect the car once it arrives, then I send him the rest through yahoo autos. He says in his email "this way the buyer is protected against any scams, lol. So when I received the payment instructions from yahoo autos, lol it requests payment by MoneyGram to some guy in Ney York City. Thats when I knew it was a scam. BTW, his payment instructions went to my spam folder that I thought was strange. If it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

All the online car websites that sell cars seem to have scammers on them here and there. Usually they all can be spotted by something odd like this case. The ones I would always see was the Supra I was looking at for a really good deal, and they wanted the money up front, and the car would be shipped from Europe.

I cought one of them, because where he was in Europe, I ended up going to for the military to the place he was "supposedly" at, and then strangely when I was there he was no where to be found, and wouldn't return calls or emails.

Morale of the story, if it seems like to good of a deal to be true, it probably is. Thanks for the heads up.

I don't really frequent any other places, so if there's any other similar forums this oughta be posted to, feel free to spread the word.
