Default good point!

[QUOTE=ChocoTaco369;9891751]This article is all theoretically based. The author is saying "because the purpose of the electronics in the car is to protect the engine against knock, it always does this." It's a bogus statement. Electronics aren't 100%. They are prone to failure....

Eexxacttly!
The electronics are there to protect when we don't/can't run the car like it should be (fill up on regular in a pinch, etc.); not to be a full-time substitute for not running the machine with the fluids/gas/etc as it was designed for.

Right on.

Premium fuel is required. Unless you drive a car designed to run on anything less. w00t.

I cringe every time my dad dumps 87 or 89 octane into his Benz.

you cant/shouldn't use low octane fuel when your computer no longer has low octane fuel maps. courtesy of HPTuners.

This is EXACTLY it. In some states, you can't get high octane fuels. I've heard of gas stations in states like New Mexico where all they have is 87 or lower octane. Imagine you're taking a road trip and you get stuck at one of those gas stations and have no choice. The purpose of the electronics is to make that gas usable. It won't hurt your engine to run a tank of 87 octane here or there. However, if you start using it ALL THE TIME, it's going to hurt the car. Running the car for 100,000 miles on 87 octane when it's made to run 91+ isn't good for the engine. The electronics just keep the motor from blowing up. It doesn't keep the motor working 100% as well with low octane as with high octane.

Like you said, the electronics are there for emergency situations, not for full-time use.

That article cracks me up. They give the example of a MERCEDES where the manual says premium fuel required. You can afford a MERCEDES, but an extra $3 per fill-up is going to kill you? WTF are these people smoking? If you're going to buy a 400hp V8, expect to pay a little more in fuel or DON'T BUY THE DAMN CAR. It's absolutely asinine.

The first thing I did when I got my TA was to read the owner's manual. The second thing was to price replacement parts: engine, tranny, rims, other drivetrain parts, etc. Ouch! Suddenly, a few extra dollars per fill up for premium didn't seem to bad................

I can't either. So it stops here. The car is designed for 91+, that is the fuel you *should* be using on a regular basis, for all the reasons that Choco & others have listed.
