The shift point on my car is set at 6700 which is where the magic stick 4 cam I have peaks power. I usually shift right at 6500rpm...seem to work out good.

With the 3.90's you have to shift often and fast. I think 5900 would work for 1-3 and finish in 4th where ever.
Use that torque!

The general rule of thumb is a few hundred RPM over HP peak. That usually throws you back just before your your torque peak so you can take advantage of the pull of your torque peak.

If you think about it, staying above your troque peak the rate of pull will be LESS than just before your torque peak. This is why we shift to keep ourselves in the area of the torque curve with the highest rate of acceleration. In an m6 car, this is where the driver plays a HUGE role in driving the car effectively. The driver's choice of shift, the speed of the shift play a large role.

Think about it, would you rather be in the 4k range accelerating at 3 miles/sec^2 or 6k range accelerating at 1.5 miles/sec^2?

The last aspect to look at is whether the torque curve stays relatively flat after peak or if it carries on. You don't want to stay in that rpm range IF the falloff of the torque increases dramatically.

So slade, I will be going to the track this friday to try my luck again. The car has gone 12.7@110 I believe. Shifting is not a problem so give me an exact number that you believe would be a good shift point for each gears. I have usually crossed the line in 4th at around 6 grand. The only thing I'm not sure about doing is reading the dyno sheet and figuring out the best possible shift points. One thing for sure is that I will try different points this time instead of going 6,500 every time!

edit: My dyno sheet is in the middle of the first page just incase you didn't see it!!

My limiter is set at 6700 and I shift at 6500, pulls hard up to that point.

Based on your dyno carrying past 6000rpm is a not a good idea. You can see the fall off of your torque curve is pretty bad at that point, sub 350 ft/lb and falling fast.

With the nature of 1-2 and then 2-3, and 3-4 being different, for 1-2 I would hold 1st till 6200 as that will drop you to 4krpm roughly, then shift at 6k rpm as that will drop you to 4200-4300rpm for 2-3 and 3-4. Keep in mind with 3 shifts, you really need to speed up the shifts or you won't see the benefit of going to 4 gears. With my old shift speed I found that I could run faster times holding 3rd to 6500rpm (3.42 gears). My 1-2 shift was atrocious though as I noticed that when lined up against cars with just a 50hp difference, on my 1-2 if I had the launch advantage they'd jump ahead on that shift. I like many others got fixated on the 2-3 so much that I neglected the 1-2 like it was fine.

I now shift 5800-6000rpm and use 4th gear albeit not completely but run better times on average than when I used to carry it to rev limiter.

Alright thank you! I will definately be testing out different options at the track starting at shifting right around 6k and then experiment from there for the best times!!! It feels a lot better knowing that I don't have to spin my stock motor so high every time I race the thing!! And again, shifting is not a problem for me so now I will have to go home and get that shift light set at 5.9 or so because it was still set on 4.8 from when the motor was fresh out of the break-in period and now has been in the car for 4k miles or so!!!

Shift that thing at 6500 right where you are.

It is where that engine is supposed to be shifted from the factory, and your HP starts falling off around 6200-6300 so 6500 shift point makes perfect sense.

When I first got my LS6 put in it shifted at 6000, then after I got it tuned to shift at 6500 I went to the track and picked up around 2 tenths on average.

When my car was just lid and exhaust I shifted at 5800 figuring that even though the car would continue to rev past that it was done making peak power by then.

Now my car pulls hardest from 3k to 6200, so even though it will rev beyond 6700 I have no reason to shift after 6200.

I don't know your specifics, but shiting at 6k will probably be good for you. Test it out.

rev limiters are for protecting the engine not a shift guide

you shift according to your engine power output not 6500 is a nice number or 7k or whatever.

His dyno (on page 1) shows him to have LESS than 350ft/lb from 6k onward

What's better to you? Pulling with only 340ft/lb at 6300rpm or pulling in the next gear at 360ft/lb at 4500rpm? keep in mind that the wheel speed will be identical due to the transmission gearing, but I'd rather be accelerating with the higher torque and acceleration value. It makes no sense to waste 500rpm of climb with a lower rate of climb when the next gear has you right there in the power band.

Shifting point=5,700 so when that light comes on your reaction time will set out to hopefully be 5,900-6,000!!

I'd spin 1st gear to 6200-6400 to get you in a better range for second, then shift 2-3 and 3-4 at around 6000.

First to second is a big gear change.

And I still bet you $100 I'll be able to run it faster than you
