Safe M6 shift point help!!!!
You M6 guys out there. I was just searching and found a couple of things but not exactly what I was looking for. What rpm do you guys shift at when racing. I have a crate LS6 motor with full bolt-ons pretty much, and I have recently been shifting right around 6,500. How long will it last doing this and what would you recommend doing? The guy's at speed inc set the rev limiter at 6,800 and when I heard that I thought that was a crazy high number for a stock engine and that is what changed me from shifting at 6,000 to shifting at 6,500 recently. I will hopefully be taking the car to the track this friday to get some times with the motor and have been running through the gears one time each night for the past 2 days and will probably do it a couple more times before friday. I am a very consistant shifter so I can hit any point that I want to and I also have a shift light which helps for the track. Of course I will experement when I am down there and see what changes with different shift points but I just don't want to be hurting anything with shifting that high on a stock LS1(6). I would much rather give the track a couple of my tenths to shift like 300-400 rpm less and be in a much smarter position financially. Thanks for all the help!!!

Camshaft, valvetrain? As far as my stock LS1 goes they safely go to 6200, but the power seems to drop off in my car around 5600-5700 so I shift around there. With your engine it's really going to depend on the cams powerband, and the stability of your valvetrain. If SpeedInc set the rev limiter there I would think it's safe to shift that high. But I would try experimenting at the track. Even if you can wind your engine 500rpms higher if you don't see any gains time-wise there's no point in stressing the engine.

If you have the valvetrain to handle it you should have no problem shifting at 6500. I shift around 6700-6800 RPM when I'm on the loud pedal hard. If you've had your car dyno'd shift where you are making peak power, if you make peak power at 6500 RPM it's not going to help much taking it past that. I'm sure some people may disagree but its kind of a feeling your car to see where it does best, as long as you aren't humping the rev limiter.

I have a bolt on LS6 in my SS and I find that shifting at 6k is just as good at 6500. I have my rev limiter set at 6500...
At the track I would try shifting 1-2, and 2nd-3rd at 6k and rev out 3rd gear to 6500 so you dont hafto shift to 4th as you go across the finish line.

^^Depends on what track bro..
I'm almost going to be redlining 4th with the T56 in the 1/4 mile..and I'm going to be shifting at 6500 in every Gear.
With the Auto you don't want to go into 4th on the 1/4.. you wouldn't pull that hard with it and it will tear the Tranny up.

I have a stock bottom end 99 with 80k on the ticker and I shift at 7k. You have to keep in mind I dont shift when the gauge says I am at 7k cause that sucka is off. I shift when it says 6500-6600 so you gotta figure in the lag on the tach. just dont go missing anyshifts or your screwed.

Thanks for the info guys, here is the dyno sheet. So where do you think I should try shifting around when I head to the track?? Dyno #'s are cutout open for 404 and closed for 394! I also have 3.90's so I will definately be hitting 4th at the end. Thanks!!

Well a stock LS6 in a Z06 redlines at 6500 so you should be fine going at least that high. With your powerband it would probably be best to spin it all the way to 6700.

My rev limiter is also set to 6800 so I shift around 6500. Looks like you were shifting at the right place to me. Your graph peaks before that but it makes your RPMs higher when you go into the next gear.

Speed Inc. set my rev limiter at 7,000 in my cam only car. I went to the track with the guys from Speed Inc. and started off with my shift light set at 6500 and went 12.39@113 Then Larry had me bump it up to 6700 and I ran 12.10@115. My car makes peak power around 6300-6400. I would say set it a couple hundred rpms above peak power because by the time you complete a shift the rpms will drop a few hundred rpms. And FWIW I shifted my car at 6300 when it had just boltons.

looks to me like shift around 6200-6300 i dont see any point in risking it any higher in the rpms when thats were your trailing off anyways, i shift my stock ls1 at about 5600-5700 because it really feels like its trailing off after that and i dont need a blown motor, thanks to desperatly need the drill mod ive missed several 5700 rpm shift to 4th and done no damage but if i was rappin it out to 6200 i might have damaged somethin

6300 or 6400 if peak is at 6200, no need to go higher than HP peak, also have to consider that torque curve too, 1-2 is a 33% reduction, 2-3 and 3-4 is a 25% reduction in RPM
6500 will drop you to 4100 rpm on the first shift roughly, but will put you at 4900 on the 2-3. According to that sheet you want to land just about 4200-4300 or so to take advantage of the pull. Torque wins races so time wasted in the upper rpm where its pulling slower will wreck your times.
I found that I could run the exact same times shifting just a little after my HP peak at 6krpm using 1-4 as I could holding to near rev limit and shifting and crossing in 3rd gear. In fact I actually pulled a better mph being able to use 4th gear.
