Default How to remove the fan assembly on 99TA

i was working on replacing my girls water pump and need to get the fan assembly out to pull the pump.. i havent lifted the car yet, which im sure is where the bolts are that are holding them in place.. but cant visually see anything from above... with the rain i had to stop working on it for a day or so, so this gives me the chance to find out the right steps to remove..

Can anyone point me in the right direction on removing the fan assembly...and is there any suggestions on something to use to clean all these parts to bring back the nice black finish to the plastic and metal? since im taking the front parts off.. i figured i woudl clean and detail these parts while they are off..

Is this an LS1?
I had my water pump off and I'm not even sure if I took the fans out, I don't think I did.

But to take them out, disconnect the IAT connection, MAF wire connection, loosen the clamp for the bellows at the throttle body, remove the four bolts that hold the lower airbox on, and remove the whole airbox/top rad support.
Then disconnect the fan wires and just pull them up and out, they just sit in tabs on the radiator.
It's all easier to do from the top IMO.
Simple green Automotive works good to clean plastic.

Why are you taking the fans out?? You do not need to remove them to replace the stock water pump. All you need to do is drain the coolant, remove the MAF/TB, take off the main accessory belt, and then the water pump is held on with 6 10mm bolts, three on each side. Remove the bolts and it pulls right off...autozone must have given you the wrong directions.

so it would be easier to remove the throttle body to do this?

And now that i have tugged on the fans and radiator( since they are attached ) how do i check to make sure that everything is still sitting in the proper location? i mean while trying to pull up on the fans.. i noticed that the radiator would lift as well and seems that it may not be sitting in place on the drivers side..

thanks for the suggestions and steps to remove..

The fan assemble doesn't bolt on, they have little clip like holders that the radiator sits on. If the radiator moves with the fan assembly it's probably still hooked up correctly. Yes you want to pull the lid and lower air box, the throttle body and MAF. Even after you drain the radiator i suggest putting a drip pan under the car since a lot of coolant will be flowing out of the hoses.

oh yeah, if it doesn't look right, then crawl under the car and you should see 2 holes on either end of the piece that the radiator sits on. there should be little prongs (on the bottom of the radiator)that go into those holes, that's how it keeps from shifting around.

If this is an LS1 you dont need to remove the radiator, that will just take up time. Removing the TB will give you the space you need to get the job done.

**Oh and if your changing out the water pump might as well get a new thermostat. And if you are getting one don't forget you need the one with the neck on it.
