Default 98 Cavalier Z24 possible engine blown

Well, try to be nice and bad things happen. I turned my wifes car on this morning to melt the ice off of it. Forgot about it 4 hours later and smokes puffing out the engine bay and smelling horrible. It still cranks up but the engine knock is crazy. Could just sitting at idle that long really destroy a motor in 20 degree weather?

What sounds like the issue? Any guesses on repair costs?

My wife is gun hole right now on a Ford Escape or Jeep Compass. So Im lookin at the possible cheaper routes.

Junkyard motor prolly your cheapest option.
look into the cooling system & the fans, it should have been able to idle till the tank was dry.

You best choice is to get a junkyard or rebuilt motor. The 2.4L is very common and can be had for cheap. It really isn't the best motor in the world but its ok.

you shouldnt have to pay too much for a junkyard motor but who knows how long it will last and it is a pain in the *** to work on these cars. motor will come out of the bottom.

Might just sell it and get an old Buick regal for 5k. Then buy a new car once I get a job toward my degree.

Results are in, shop replaced Coil pack, and plugs. Cleaned Coolent sensor to make that light go away. Heads are ok.
Coil pack was under warrenty so only paid for labor and plugs.

New issue has shown up. When I drove it to the shop it stuck in park. I jammed and fought it for it to slide in drive. Now keys are getting stuck in the ignition. What gives what could I have damaged?

Had that same problem on my Escort. There is a cable going from the shifter to the ignition that tells the ignition that the shifter is in park so the key can be removed. On my car there is a little rocker that pushes that cable when the shifter is in park. That rocker came loose and was not hitting the cable. Remove your console and you should be able to see how it works and figure out which piece is causing the problem. Post some pics if you get stumped.

In the meantime, there is usually a little hole in the console next to the shifter that you can insert a screwdriver or some such object into to override the shift interlock and remove your key.
