Default K&N air filter how do you clean

How do you go about effectively cleaning these filters. I had a nice spectre, but it some how fell off. My in-law found one of these laying around, but its needs cleaned good. What kind of stuff do you use to clean them, soap water? its got some deep gunk on it, brake cleaner starting fluid? I'm down on money thats why im asking

They make cleaning kits that come with instructions. I wouldn't recommend any other method besides what K&N recommends.

Nope, no other way. Hit your local parts house and pick up a kit for $10-20. I buy it by bulk, it's waaaaayyyy cheaper for a 1 gallon jug of oil/cleaner than it is to buy the kits all the time. The kits are easier, though, with the aerosal can of oil/kleaner...

Gasoline, brake kleen, etc will all make it worse, or worse yet destroy the filter.

You can take a garden hose and run water from the inside out to loosen up the bad stuff. But, doing that can also remove the oil you need to trap dirt later.

I use paper as well. Lots of threads claim the wet K&N robs HP on the dyno in these cars.

Throw it in the garbage, get a normal paper filter that was designed for your engine...and have better engine protection. And that mythical 1-2hp gain by using a K&N filter, well you can get by with out it. K&N is a big hoax on the performance industry.

I have used K&N never had a problem. So it is up to you. Fram is good too.

Anyways when you buy the recharge kit it comes with instructions. Also when i re-oil my filter, after i am done oiling it i do not put it back in the car. I let the filter sit 24 hours before i re-install. But that is me

Exactly. I think the instructions say something about that too - to let it sit for a bit so that the excess oil will 'fall' off.... Even then, I've seen puddles from it dripping still....

I use Grease lighting, or Mean Green de greasers and spary the hell out of them till it is complety covered. Then rince with water. Repeat if nessacary. THe air dry in sun or blow dry it with compressed air. Should be white after thatthose process are done. After dry install it, or spray with K&N oil. Either way works.

I'm still using the same K&N since early 2001 with no problems even with FRA/FTRA. If you decide to clean it get their kit, follow the directions and don't over oil it. Or just use the Fram.

...Using compressed air will ruin the filter. Either tear it, or embed the particles in the gauze.

I was not talking 100 psi of compressed air. Just something to move the wetness out of the filter. Either way works.

To each his own... Personally, I would not because it will ruin a $40 filter. But you do it however you want...

Instructions tell you sling off the water and let it air dry.

For flat filters I used to lay it on a towel overnight. The water would wick out into the towel and it would dry more quickly. Drying correctly is an overnight deal.

But paper filters are good and they're cheap. I don't use K&N any more. The bling factor is way over for me.

I've used the same filter for a few years with no problems. Wash it with the kit every few months and you're good.
