Default Starter chatter

I've noticed that in the past few weeks my car's developed a sort of chatter when I start it. It doesn't do it if I only hold the ignition in the start position long enough to just barely start it. Otherwise, just as the car fires up, I hear a quick little chatter sound for maybe 1/2 a second and then it goes away. Has anyone else had this problem? It almost seems like the starter isn't disengaging correctly.

Now that I mention it, I remember that it first began happening very shortly if not immediately after I changed my steering rack. Not sure what that could have to do with it. I didn't move the motor when I did it or anything.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey guys, I'm still having this problem. I just took the car out of the garage for spring and had it on the lift. If sounds like the noise is coming from the starter for sure, so I thought maybe the drive wasn't working right on the starter. Bought a new Delco starter, put it in, and low and behold, it's still doing it! It starts just fine, but it sounds like it's touching the flexplate as it's desengaging. Anyone see this before?

As in your pinion seal post you are answering your own questions. Was the old one shimmed?

Replace what? I just put a new starter in it. Also checked the starter relay to make sure it wasn't sticking. All fine.

No, the old one wasn't shimmed and neither is the new one. Unless the flex plate got bent, I can't imagine why it would just start doing that all of the sudden, though. This is weird.

You need to look at your flywheel. All of your flywheel. Make sure you have no mangled teeth or burrs that could be hanging up your starter. I know your starter is new but look at the engagement teeth on that as well. It could have imperfections on it??

Start with the obvious and don't assume anything.

Good luck.

Well, figured out the problem. Turns out the flexplate was broken. Replaced it with a Yank SFI flexplate and also installed a Yank converter. Good to go. Problem solved.
