Default STARTER question for anyone........

My "starter motor" is my factory original, 12 years old. I just put a very powerful brand new AC Delco battery in about 3 weeks ago. The old battery I had was draining and leaking acid, it was 6 years old.

Cold engine...it starts perfectly like a monster. Everything electrical runs perfectly even at night, a/c on, 1,000 watt stereo and 12" woofer hitting. No problems at all there.

After engine is warmed up......the starter will struggle to start a little bit. Not terrible, but its definitely a little struggle for a split second, then it turns over strong and starts.

QUESTION is:
Does a starter just FAIL. OR....do starters slowly start to fail and get weaker and weaker over time. I'll just go get a new one before I get stuck somewhere if thats the case.

The normal failure mode with the motor is worn armature bushings (bronze) or worn brushes, both of which take time.
If you have access to parts and a small lathe (to turn the commutator) you can rebuild it yourself. The bushings and brushes used to be available from NAPA. In your case, it sounds like the armature is starting to drag on the field coils. This would indicate bad bushings.

I really don't have the tools to do anything. I guess I could take it to a starter shop and let them do it.

What would it cost approx to have a shop rebuild it?

I can get a brand new AC Delco from the dealership for $315 THATS CRAZY

AC Delco reman for $167.00 from www.rockauto.com

Don't bother trying to rebuild it as it'll probably cost the same as a replacement...

If you don't have the tools to rebuild it yourself, see if a motor rewind shop can fix you up. I have no idea what it would cost, though.

Yeah, I'm just gonna get the AC Delco "reman". They are remaned at GM so they are good as brand new, according to my friend that works in parts at the dealer.

Drop the old one, put the new one in. Be done with it.
