Default dies after start up???

hey guys this is the second time this happens where my z/28 has trouble starting up like its out of gas and eventually turns on and the idle is nasty low like under 4000 and its just sputtering trying to stay alive then dies out completely slowly. it did crank normally once and i was getting ready to go but then died after about 30 secs...

Last time this happened about 2 - 3 weeks ago i messed with some wires like the air temp/maf connector/tps.. etc and after a few more tries it worked???

it left me stranded in culver city last night and needed to tow all the way to anaheim.. ugh!

the car was acting fine all day yesterday no problems...

i noticed the PCV hose is a little swelled up like it may need to be replaced and the change oil light did come on... hmmm ?? i usually never let it get to that point but **** happens..

thanks guys!

I'm going to go with my usual response which is: fuel pump. Get a pressure gauge and check it with the key ON, then the engine running (if you can start it), and finally with the car off. Any variance in those three areas would indicate a failing pump which would make your car seem like it's running out of gas...

Right at the drivers side fuel rail...........

If your readings are good..........clean your MAF.

Does the engine start normally and run fine if you start it when its already fully warmed up?

it wont turn on at all. Its as if its out of gas.. i unplugged the fuel filter and turned the key on and it sprayed gas everywhere.. so its sending some fuel.

But ever since i changed the fuel filter it just tries to turn on like its out of gas.
Before i swapped the fuel filter it would kinda turn on but slowly die like a weird slowmotion idle.

Also a MAP sensor trouble code came on but i cleaned it out and put it back in and the code hasnt come back.

LASTLY when i try turning it on now the gauges 'zero out' or reset like when when you disconnect or put a new battery.

??

This is ridiculously stressful
Thanks for the help

Acting as if it's out of gas is exactly how the car behaves. With my '98 Mustang I could at least get it to start up, but with my 'Z andT/A once the pump went that was it. Is the pump even turning on? When you turn the key to the ON position, not RUN, you should hear the pump in the back whirring/making noise indicating that it's priming. It's really hard to say about the fuel pump unless you've got a pressure gauge. For example, it might be pressurizing during priming, but maybe failing during cranking, running, etc. Fuel pumps go out on these cars all the time. I HATE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMPS....

Mine would be fine for a few days. Then it would just crank and crank. Wouldn't hold it's prime and finally just died. It wouldn't start at all. Got it replaced and I haven't had a lick of trouble since

Pumps are mildly cheap compared to having them installed I mean basically get it high enough. Drop the exhaust and drop the tank (hopefully not full) lol and just step by step unplug and plug in. Look online or go buy the Haynes repair manual for camaro and firebirds. It'll take a half a day or so. If not longer depending.

Orrrrrrr...do what some of us have: http://camaroforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=38304

It's an ugly thing to do, but it's your choice: slave away dropping axles, exhaust parts, gas tanks and the rest of the planet, or cut up your car-not an easy choice to make.

And no, the pumps aren't cheap. You can try swapping out just the pump itself and not the entire assembly, but....

Before you start down that path get yourself a fuel pressure gauge-it may be something else...

I highly recommend cutting the trap door to get to the pump. I did this and it literally took me an hour from start to finish to swap my fuel pump. If you are changing the pump I would go with a nice racetronix kit with the 255 pump and hotwire kit, I did last year and haven't had a problem with anything.

Pumps are cheap compared to having a mechanic install it for you...lol. I got a quote from my mechanic and it was around 900 bucks. Pump=not even half of that

Lets get some more symptoms/description first. So is it bucking at all? Sound like you're hitting the throttle when you start it/trying to start it? Once it starts, is it fine until you drop it in gear then it jerks and dies? Have you had it started and drove it any and it be fine for a bit?

ok when it first broke down it would turn on some times but the idle was sooooo badly low and sluggish.... like it would die in slow motion kind of.. i could hear a backfiring noise coming from the engine compartment every now and then...

NOW ever since i put in a new fuel filter it wont turn on at all.. it just keeps trying to turn on as if its out of gas... it wont catch...

thanks for the help guys

Check the ignition relay too. It's under the hood. It's the same as the horn relay. Try it and see if it starts. Idk. It still sounds like the fuel pump. But I had this issue also.
