How does the oil monitor sensor work?
Does anyone know how the oil monitor sensor works? Sense it samples the oil if you have a head gasket blown shouldnt it set off the gauge light?

The PCM uses algorithms based on engine speed, operating temp, and a lot of other variables to calculate the oil life. There is no "sensor" that tells the oil life...its all calculated. GM does not use any type of timer or mileage to turn the light on.

What it does is it pulls the dipstick while you are in bed asleep and checks the color of the oil. When its black it turns the light on for your morning commute. Its working even you are sleeping.

They should have put it on a timer because sometimes the change oil light wont come on for 8k, 9K, 10K miles and these new motors are turning into sludge buckets. Especially the lease cars where nobody cares about them anyways. "As long as the oil meter still shows 1% life left, I don't need to change my oil."

Even if there was a sensor dipped into the oil measuring how well it's doing, how will that even begin to tell you about the status of the headgaskets?
This isn't 2111...it's 2011. Car's don't have a sensor and light for everything that could go wrong. You think your headgasket is blown...well then get some tools, pop the hood open and take a look-see for yourself. There is not idiot light for headgasket status.
