Default Oil Pan Leak

I have a 98 Z28, and I had it up on the lift a few days ago checking the transmission. It'd been rebuilt last week and the car isn't performing like it used to. While I was poking around I noticed that the seal around the oil pan is leaking. It seems like it ought to be a pretty straight forward process to replace the gasket. is there any surprises waiting for me or anything I should know about before I start ?

Thanks in advance.

are you referring to the actyal pan gasket, or the rear main seal?

Yeah, I thought my pan was leaking but it turned out to be the rear main seal.

If it turns out to be the rear seal what will it take to replace it? Is that going to require a major operation?

rear main is not too bad, remove the trans, and the seal is in a cover, you can remove the seal while its in the cover but can also very easily be done with the cover off, but the cover has to be aligned properly or it will leak. If you tighten the lower bolts first it will pull the cover into place then torque the rest in a criss cross pattern.

Check the torque on the bolts from the pan into the rear cover, before you go to the trouble of replacing the seal. Just re-torqueing them fixed my leak in the same place.

Torque specs in the manual? Is there a write up on removing a 6 speed standard on the site? I've dropped a fair number of automatics, but never a standard.
